Poterie De Bavent French Pottery Covered Terrines with Under-Plates, Set of Four
About the Item
A marvelous set of four individual terrines from the Poterie de Bavent, Normadie, France circa 1900-1920.
Potted and glazed by hand, each terrine includes a lid and under-plate – a coupelle, couvercle, et sous-plat.
Glazed in the rich colors of Provençal France – deep greens, yellow and ochre.
The terrines sit on a pedestal base with applied side handles. The lids fit tightly and feature a conical top knob. The deep, bowl shaped under-plates have inner rims for holding the terrine in place, and generously raised sides.
Individual terrines have many uses from serving Onion or Potato Soup Au Gratin, dips or pâtè with sliced French breads, or bouillabaisse.
Since the Middle Ages, Bavent is known for the clay that gives a rich and gorgeous coloring to terracotta pieces. The terrines are molded by hand using the same traditions that date to the mid 19th Century.
The first artisanal faÏence pottery factory in Bavent was established in 1842 by industrialist Maurice Comptet, and was named The Tuilerie du Mesnil de Bavent. It became well known for the production of tiles, pots, life-sized animals, and architectural ornaments, The Mesnil pottery of Bavent holds a French Enterprise Label of Living Heritage.
