Silver Plate and Crystal Caviar Bowl Dish Server, France 1970s
About the Item
The French silversmith AMO designed this stylish modernist Mid-Century silver plate and crystal caviar serving bowl in the 1970s. The streamlined chic design of this dish chiller has a rounded shape, featuring a large crystal container with a silverplate metal edge and holder and the same crystal caviar bowl insert. The silver-plated trims of each container are ornate with a lovely beaded pattern all around. The original marking on this set was probably an adhesive sticker. It was removed on the first cleaning.
The chiller is in good condition, with minor wear on the metal edges. Check the close-up.
Measurements: 8.07 in diameter (20.5 cm) x 4.75 in high (12 cm). The small caviar bowl is 4.32 in diameter (11 cm) x 2.57 in high (6.5 cm).

- Mid-Century Modernist Geometric Lucite Bowl Barware Server, 1970sBy General DecorationLocated in Atlanta, GAThis sophisticated Mid-Century modernist Lucite or acrylic barware bowl, tray, or serving dish was crafted by Grainware in the 1970s. The serving centerpiece boasts a geometric shape with three carved containers for snacks, olives, nuts, or vegetables and has a tall and sturdy handle. The acrylic has a luxurious weight and crystal-clear transparency, similar to genuine crystal. There is no visible maker's mark. The serving set is in excellent condition, with no pronounced signs of wear. Measurements: 11.50 in wide (29 cm) x 10 in deep (25.5 cm) x 8 in high (20.5 cm). Note: Acrylic was invented in 1902 by Otto Röhm, a German chemist, but its mass production did not begin until 1933 when Röhm GmbH (currently Evonik Degussa GmbH) began to market it under the Plexiglas® brand. Also known as ACRYLITE®, Lucite®, and Perspex®, acrylic is noted for its unparalleled transparency among polymers. It is also BPA-free and a food-grade material commonly used for outdoor tableware. Not long after Plexiglas became available, Plastic Productions Company of Redwood City, CA, began manufacturing housewares using acrylic sheets. These products were primarily black or gray. As a result, the products were initially marketed under the Gray n Ware brand, later changed to Grainware. Charles McCrea, who owned the Plastic Productions Company, was also its chief product designer. In June of 1951, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) acquired several Grainware products, which remain on display today. In 1971, SiLite Inc. acquired the Plastic Productions Company, a housewares and giftware manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois. Under its president, Robert Parmacek, SiLite introduced new products made using transparent acrylic sheets under the Grainware brand, which were wildly successful. Consequently, Grainware became known as a brand of predominantly clear acrylic products. The next transformation of the Grainware brand came in the late 1970s when Mr. Parmacek changed the production process from vacuum forming of acrylic sheets to injection molding of acrylic resins. The new technique enabled Grainware to mass-produce intricate designs, cementing its reputation as a high-end brand of unique giftware and housewares. In 1991, Carlisle Companies Inc. acquired SiLite Inc. and the Grainware brand, but Jolly Tone remained the primary manufacturer of Grainware products. In 2012, Jolly Tone bought the Grainware brand in partnership with William Bounds...Category

The caviar dish is fitted with an impressive hallmarked push fit domed cover, encompassed to the rim with a simplified leaf decorated border. The cover is surmounted with exceptional cast floral and foliate motif emanating from a cast silver bud style finial; this ornamental motif is detachable, secured in situ via the screw fit finial. The base is encompassed with further chased leaf decoration, reflecting that of the vessels upper rim. The decoration to the base incorporates two cartouches, one bearing the contemporary engraved initials 'EDCHSV' and the other featuring a coat of arms depicting an escutcheon of three mullets of six points pierced, surmounted with a helm with closed-visor. The serving dish base is supported by four exceptional cast silver paw style feet, accented with leaf and floral rosette designs. The hallmarks to the cover and rim of the base include: Maker's mark: Untraced Silver quality/purity mark: Mercury, 1 (.950, 950/1000, Paris) Guarantee mark: Paris (large guarantee) NOTE: From August 1819 the French silverware hallmarking system was developed to require pieces to be marked with the maker's mark, the mark indicating fineness and a guarantee mark. These continued to be the required range of hallmarks until May 1838, where the head of Minerva mark was utilised opposed to Mercury. This determines the date of the piece as circa 1830. Condition This French silver caviar dish is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast and chased decoration is very sharp and the engraved ornamentation is very crisp. The French hallmarks struck to the underside of the cover and rim of the base are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this magnificent example of 19th century silverware...Category
