Goldscheider Art Déco Figure 'Papagena', Dancer In Exotic Costume, by Dina Kuhn
About the Item
Impressive Goldscheider Vienna Ceramic Figurine of the 1920s:
The young lady with artfully pinned up hair and headdress wears only an exotic-looking short skirt in the manner of a row of protruding flower petals, which are tied around the hips with a wide bow that reaches down to the feet, and poses with next to the head raised hand on a high rock covered with flowers and a butterfly.
The rock also serves as a base, artist's signature 'Kuhn' on the back, version with monochrome painting in shades of black.
Designed by DINA KUHN (1891 - 1963), actually Berhardine Kuhn, Austrian ceramist and artisan, worked for the Wiener Werkstätte and the Waechtersbacher ceramics. After completing her schooling, she began an eight-year course at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna in 1912. Her teachers included the architect and designer Josef Hoffmann, the painter and designer Franz Cižek, the painter and graphic artist Kolo Moser, the architect Oskar Strnad and the ceramist Michael Powolny. Already during her training, Dina Kuhn designed ceramics for the Wiener Werkstätte, of which she became a member in 1917. 1923 Founding of his own artistic ceramics workshop, designs also for the Goldscheider, Augarten and Bimini glass manufacturers.
Kuhn designed this model circa 1923/1924.
