Silver Cruet Stand, Santander, Spain, 19th Century
About the Item
With hallmarks (Santander, Trabanco, M.Navarro).
Holding a basket with a handle on its head is the figure of an Indian, with a skirt and headdress. The figure is standing on a column, flanked by the two circular spaces for the cruets and by two other supports for salt and pepper shakers. The decoration based on classical columns and palmettes are characteristic of neoclassicism, while the presence of the feathered native brings a touch of exoticism much appreciated in the 19th century.
