Kitty Clive Figure
About the Item
One of Bow's theatrical figures.
The actress Mrs Catherine (Kitty) Clive, 1711-1785, as Mrs Riot, the Fine Lady, introduced, with The Fine Gentleman, into David Garrick’s farce Lethe in 1749; the figure taken from a mezzotint by Charles Mosley, 1750, after a drawing by Thomas Worlidge. She stands on a flat marbled base and wears a wide pannier skirt decorated with red, gilt and green-leafed floral sprigs; a yellow pet-en-lair jacket with sack back, pink applied ruching, gilt edging and double ruffles, over a laced decollate bodice; ruffle at neck; red shoes and a mob cap. A lap dog under her arm. Creamy-white body, clear glaze and green translucency. The figure press modelled with open base. H. 10.3 in (26.1 cm).
Coloured examples of this figure are scarce, and were probably decorated outside the factory. Duesbury's records record two examples being decorated at Derby.
