Charles Hubert Brannam Grotesque Pottery Smiling Cat Figure
About the Item
An unusual large art pottery figure of a grotesque smiling cat with glass eyes from an original design by Blanche Vulliamy made by Charles Hubert Brannam and dating from around 1905.
The Brannam pottery was started by Thomas Brannam in Barnstaple, Devon in 1848. In 1862 his son Charles Hubert Brannam (aged 12) joined his father at the pottery however it was not until 1879 that he encouraged his father to allow him to produce art ware.
The cat modelled in red terracotta clay is portrayed seated with large paws and with its tail resting on its back. The cat has a long neck and wears a bow tie and holds its head to one side. The cat has incised detail with grinning facial features and is decorated in dark blue glazes with green and black glass eyes. The cat is struck twice with makers marks C.H.BRANNAM BARNSTAPLE to the base and is numbered 415.
Provenance: acquired from the British Art market.
In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
