French Faience Figural White Goose Pâté Terrine, Michel Caugant
About the Item
A vintage figural Goose Pâté Terrine made for Laurent Caugant, a Bretagne pâté maker since 1927 – circa 1950s.
Laurent’s son Michel created these figural forms as containers for selling his fathers pâté in their luxury food shop. They rose in popularity as their patrons sought to collect all of the different animal terrines that were made. Each form contained the pâté made from the animal represented.
The two-piece goose terrine is made and painted by hand, the lid lifts off to show a shallow serving bowl. The white glazed goose has an orange beak and realistic eyes. Charming detail to the mold. Caugant offered a few different goose pâté servers, all uniquely glazed by hand. This is one of the larger Goose pieces they produced, lovely on the table or on the kitchen shelf.
The bottom is printed: Cette piece en faience veritable, a ete entirement realisee a la main. Je nous la propose en exclusivite. – Michel Caugant
Translation: This piece is true faience and was made entirely by hand. I want to recommend it exclusively.
