18th c Sterling Silver Dish Cross by William Plummer c1780
About the Item
18th c Sterling silver dish Cross by William Plummer c1780. William Plummer was apprenticed to Edward Aldridge, clothworker on 4 February 1746. He was free on 5 February 1755. His first hallmark is entered as a large worker on 8 April 1755. His address was: Foster Lane, then Gutter Lane on 11 September 1757, where he appears as plate worker in the Parliament Report list 1773. Each arm of the dish cross terminates with an hexafoil motif and impressive adjustable, cast scrolling leg, with a lobed scrolling plate mount. Each leg collars the bar and moves horizontally to allow the frame size to be adjusted to hold either round or oblong dishes. The four spokes run through a central, open cast medallion with bead work decorated edge. Apparently the cross is lacking a date and town mark. It may be missing a burner.
