An Georgian Solid Silver Sugar Tongs/Tea Tongs Naturalistic Style - 1836
About the Item
We are delighted to offer these spectacular Georgian solid silver tea tongs (sugar tongs/nips) made in Birmingham 1830 with the marks of George Richmond Collins & Co.
This may just be the most crisp/finest condition Georgian silverware that we have had the pleasure of offering with all the details absolutely crisp and as if untouched.
This pair is truly the royal flush of fine, intricate and collectable naturalistic Georgian silverware. The entirety is cast and features a magnificent vine design with delightful accents of grapes and vine leaves. The height of each embossed element, the degree of intricacy and the lifelike detailing/stippling in the background are second to none.
Such naturalistic designs with high points and finely stippled surfaces are usually the most prone to wearing out first as years and years of use, polishing and handling take their toll on the article.
Very rarely have we seen an example (regardless of the article) to remain in such crisp and good order on all fronts - upon holding in hand, one can appreciate the tactile feel of each embellishment and somewhat experience what Georgian silverware would have been like back in the period when freshly crafted and retailed.
Furthermore, the size and weight of this pair is impressive and superior in comparison to normal counterpart tongs - such larger tongs would likely have been used with a 'master' sugar bowl or sugar box which would also symbolise the wealth of the owner as unlike today, sugar was an expensive commodity back then.
A set of English hallmarks are present on the inner sides of the 'bowls' of the tongs.

- Antique Solid Silver Georgian Asparagus Tongs, Leveson-Gower/Sutherland CrestBy William Eley & William FearnLocated in London, GBWe are delighted to have acquired and be able to offer this pair of solid silver Georgian asparagus tongs made by William Eley & William Fearn in London, 1820. The tongs feature a wonderful classical style with the terminals of the handles presenting a scalloped design and the entire edge accented by a contrasting border formed by two fine lines. A noteworthy crest is present on the end of the handle with it bearing the crest of Leveson-Gower ('wolf statant collared and chained') and the other crest for the Sutherland Clan, described as a 'cat-a-mountain salient'. The tongs were eventually discovered at Dunrobin Castle which is situated in Sutherland (Highland area of Scottland), and was/is a very ornate and extravagant castle that is still standing today. During the period this piece was made, the 1st Duke of Sutherland, George Granville Leveson-Gower owned extensive land which eventually resulted in him being one of the wealthiest individuals in Britain to such an extent that titles and speculation such as "The Leviathan...Category

- Antique Georgian Solid Silver Tea Caddy Spoon Vine Leaf Design, Joseph WillmoreBy Joseph WillmoreLocated in London, GBWe are delighted to offer this wonderful little solid silver tea caddy spoon made by Joseph Willmore in Birmingham, 1814. The spoon is beautifully crafted in the form of a single vine leaf with an accurate and intricate design ranging from the stem (handle) of the leaf to the different textures (stippled & embossed silver) on the surface of the spoon. The centre of the spoon is embossed in the form of a bunch of grapes with its stem conjoining to the thicker vine handle. Such spooms would have traditionally been used to scoop some tea leaves out of a tea caddy/canister, however, with some creative ideas why not try some new uses such as serving spices or even as a small canapé...Category

- Antique Victorian Solid Silver Gilt Naturalistic Leaf Spoon Pair, 1842By Sebastian Crespel IILocated in London, GBWe are delighted to offer this fine and exquisite pair of early Victorian solid silver tea spoons made in London 1842 with the maker's mark of Sebastian Crespell. The pair features a highly ornate and desirable 'naturalistic' design with the entirety of the spoon-shaped as a leaf and branch. Intricate engravings on the leaf bowls and the realistic form of the stem/branch indicate a high level of craftsmanship and artistry by the silversmith. Upon close inspection, the asymmetric and naturally flowing design is further apparent and is a delightful touch. Not only are these spoons practical for a wide variety of uses from tea to desserts, but are a modest yet discerning addition to any collection or interior decor for a sophisticated and nature-inspired look. The pair is gilded with a yellowish/lemon hue that has been worn and patinated in a very attractive colour/tone. A full set of English hallmarks are present on the reverse side of the bowl.
