Folk Art Portrait Painting "Young Girl In a Red Dress", American, Circa 1825

About the Item

Lovely full length portrait of a young girl in this folk art painting; oil on canvas mounted on board. She is posing wearing an attractive and colorful red dress while holding a floral branch in each hand; a colorful and a fabricated pastoral landscape background completes the subject matter. She has rosy cheeks and is wearing a simple red coral necklace. The artist is unidentified but surely American and early 19th century, circa 1825. The painting is in very nice condition and has been lightly professionally cleaned to remove old varnish. Black light detects minor inpainting to the girl's forehead and small spots to the lower portion of the red dress; also some areas above left "in the field". The canvas is sound and firmly laid on board, while being housed in the appropriate complimentary period wood frame. American folk painting achieved it’s peak of popularity after 1800 when citizens wanted a symbol to record their newly achieved accomplishments in life. They wanted to express pride in their recently acquired status and preserve the moment for the benefit and amusement of future generations. The portrait was a way to document this in perpetuity. This portrait painting of a young girl merits the attention of folk art collectors seeking fine quality 19th century paintings by untrained artists. It comprises a pleasing subject matter in a colorful setting; a nice addition to Americana collections. These painting clocks are very rare, especially containing the music box. Of Austrian manufacture circa 1820-1830, this Biedermeier picture (painting) clock is a naive and charming oil painting on metal, which depicts nine people dressed in colorful period clothes at various activities; a woman with her child and carrying fruit in a basket atop her head, two young lovers, a man in a boat, another man walking with his dog, while still another gentleman leaves the town hall. A woman at the window...

  • American Pottery Pig Bank, Circa 1880's
    Located in Incline Village, NV
American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited. The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...

  • Superb Ammi Phillips American Folk Art Portrait Painting, circa 1840
    By Ammi Phillips
    Located in Vero Beach, FL
Superb Ammi Phillips American Folk Art Portrait painting, circa 1840 We are proud of our acquisition of this authentic masterpiece by Ammi Phillips (1788-1865). The finely rendered portrait depicts an attractive young girl in a delightful lifelike quality. The pretty face is a refreshing change from the stern expressions of most of the paintings showing mature female or male sitters. Phillips palette is dark with a strikingly dramatic use of light to her face. The painting, on its original stretchers, is in untouched condition. The frame is period. This painting is unsigned, as are most of his works, but bares the unmistakable characteristics of a Phillips painting. Portrait of a young girl holding a book and wearing a golden whistle. From the New England estate of the renowned Folk Art Collector and scholar, John Bauer...
