About the Item
Striking Makonde animal helmet mask, dog or hyena, Tanzania. Early 20th century with dark patina from traditional tribal use, wear inside from being used. Finely carved features, with perky ears, open eyes and long pointed mouth with lots of teeth. 10 inches high, as shown about 13 inches high (looking forward). Visible repair and hole in neck below chin, see detail image. This is an old hardwood mask, with heavy patina, chips, dings and signs of age inside, including some old glue drips, probably once broken around the base of the mouth and neck and put back together, but a wonderful alive mask. Repairs are quite stabile now see images. Ex private collection WA, ex private collection S. California. On custom wood and metal stand, total height 17 3/4 inches.

- Condition:Repaired: In very good condition for an old mask. Signs of an old break in neck and around back of mouth, stable but shows some repairs by the previous owner. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. Old repair by a previous owner to break around base of mouth and down neck.

It has been worn which places it at the beginning of the 20th century at least. The pigments darkening the skin (not the hairstyle) have faded or gone. Some small gaps on some protruding parts.
