Patinated Bronze Torchère with Classical Female Figure
About the Item
This beautiful piece consists of a patinated bronze female figure holding an urn with a glass flame, which serves as a lamp, all standing on a tall and finely decorated wooden plinth.
The plinth is crafted from ebonized wood, set on a slim bronze base with paw feet. This wooden plinth is mounted, on its front and back, with black white-veined marble and a patinated bronze profile of a man, framed within gilt bronze medallions. On the sides, there are patinated bronze mounts of lions' heads, set against crossed sceptres and strapwork.
The patinated bronze sculpture of a young, classical woman stands atop the plinth. She assumes a contrapposto pose, with her right leg carrying the weight of her body and her left leg bent at the knee. Her hips are turned slightly, highlighting the curve of her form. The dress she wears clings to her body, further emphasizing her idealized body. The woman lowers her eyes away from our gaze. In her raised arms, she holds a classical urn, which produces a large flame. This flame is crafted from opaque glass, and serves as a lamp. Once it is turned on, the light produced will illuminate the glass with a warm color, imitating fire.
With its sculptural female body, this lamp will add a classic sense of beauty to the room in which it is placed.

- Two Orientalist Patinated and Gilt Bronze Figural Torchères by BarbedienneBy Ferdinand Barbedienne, Émile GuilleminLocated in London, GBÉmile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin, the famous French sculptor, designed these exquisite bronze figural torchères in circa 1880. Guillemin was an accomplished artist, who regularly exhibited at the Salon in Paris from the 1870s-1890s. Indeed, Guillemin showcased the original models for these candelabra at the Salon of 1872 to great acclaim. Guillemin’s designs were realised in bronze by the famous metalworker and foundry owner, Ferdinand Barbedienne. The Barbedienne factory was of the leading producers of artistic bronzes in the 19th century. The firm enjoyed great success, winning multiple awards at the major International Exhibitions of the period. The torchères are signed, ‘Ele Guillemin’ and stamped, ‘F. Barbedienne. Fondeur’, with an ‘A. Collas’ reduction stamp. Described in Barbedienne’s catalogue of 1886 as ‘Deux Femmes, Indienne et Persane’, these torchères take the form of an Indian and Persian woman. Each figure holds a five-light candelabrum above her head, composed of scrolled branches, wide gadrooned drip-pans, and foliate urn-shaped capitals. The Persian woman wears loose trousers, with a small top and short jacket. The Indian woman is dressed in a knotted skirt...Category

Coutan was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905.[3] Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914.
