Hans Bergström for ASEA Belysning Wall Light in Brass and White Glass
By Hans Bergström, ASEA
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Hans Bergström for ASEA Belysning, wall light, brass, matted glass, Sweden, 1950s
This cone-shaped wall light is held by filigree brass details ending in a small rectangular plate. Due to the matted glass in opaque white the light gets smooth and cozy. The combination of the golden metal and the white matted glass creates a beautiful design.
Hans Bergström (1910-1996), a luminary figure hailing from the realm of Swedish architecture and design, was born on November 4, 1910, in Karlshamn, Sweden. After his completion of secondary school in 1927, Hans embarked on an internship at Ystad Metall, a local craft industry situated near his grandfather's farm. In 1929, he sought further education and enrolled at the esteemed School of Art and Design in Stockholm. Remarkably, even before his graduation from this institution, at the age of twenty, Hans showcased his prowess as a designer for Ystad Metall at the prestigious Stockholm Exhibition in 1930.
In the 1920s, Hans encountered his future wife Verna during the summer holidays in his native town of Karlshamn. In 1934, the couple jointly established the company ateljé Lyktan, a venture that combined their collaborative efforts in luminaire design and various artistic pursuits. Bergström undertook various commissions spanning a wide range of architectural environments, including churches, private residences, and public buildings. It was from this point forward that Bergström spearheaded a revolution in Swedish luminaire manufacturing, fundamentally transforming the perception and application of electric lighting in the coming decades.
During the advent of the 1950s, the emergence of plastic as a novel material in modern lighting captured Hans' attention. As the United States gradually introduced plastic as a material of significance, Bergström encountered a method involving the application of sprayed plastic onto a rotating wire frame, facilitated by a spray gun. Interestingly, this technique bore certain resemblances to the later approach employed by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in the creation of their Viscontea Lamp...

Tito Agnoli for O-Luce Wall Light in Teak and Brass
By O-Luce, Tito Agnoli
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Tito Agnoli for O-Luce, wall light, white lacquered metal, teak, cord, brass, plastic, Italy, 1957.
Impressive wall mounted light designed by Tito Agnoli, and manufactured by O-Luce. Unique for this item is the combination of elements derived from the 177 A model, designed in 1957, and the 1102 model, designed in 1959. Its arm is an 177 A design and executed in teak, lacquered metal and brass. It features a '1102' pendant hanging on a cord. The cord, directed by a brass tube attached to the wooden arm, leads down where a brass cylinder functions as a counterweight. The brass cylinder keeps the pendant in its position. The design showcases the mechanicals of the lamp, which makes this a very raw yet refined light that would work very well in the living room or as an office light...

Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce ‘181’ Wall Light
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce, wall light, model ‘181’, lacquered steel, coated steel, lacquered aluminum, brass, Italy, 1951
This wall light, a variation on model 181, is designed by the influential designer in the field of lighting design Gino Sarfatti (1912-1985) for Arteluce in 1951. Sarfatti founded Arteluce in 1936, an Italian lighting company that garnered acclaim for its groundbreaking and pioneering designs, defying conventional norms prevalent during that period. Functional principles, such as flexibility and adaptability, guided Sarfatti through the design process. He conceived a modular approach to lighting systems, enabling the user to personalize and adjust the lighting fixtures according to its preferences and needs. A significant part of the released designs incorporated practical elements, such as adjustable arms and rotating mechanisms. This innovative approach had a profound influence on the conceptualization and utilization of lighting within interiors around that time. In addition to their functional attributes, the lamps crafted by the company were predominantly characterized by a pure and minimalist aesthetic. A decoration was subordinate to the constructive element, focusing on the essential composition of geometric forms and usage of materials.
Gino Sarfatti considers this type of wall lights as ‘extendible wall sconce...

Giuseppe Ostuni for O-Luce '181' Multi Applicable Lights
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Giuseppe Ostuni for O-Luce, large set of '181' wall lamps, Italy, 1950s
This large set of wall lights is applicable to many different ways. Attach the lamp to a desk or a table and use it as a desk light, fix it to case piece or secure to the wall. Its dark metal, cylindrical shade is minimalistic and modest. You can place one piece for Directional light, or several to lighten up a complete space.
Giuseppe Ostuni (1907-1994) can be considered one of the most influential designers in modern lighting design. Born in Trieste, Italy in 1907, Giuseppe and his older brother Angelo Ostuni (1904-1981) grew up in turbulent times; in 1915 Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire during the First World War. Only a few years later in 1922, Benito Mussolini became head of the Italian government and began to establish his fascist regime that would last till 1943. During the last year of the Second World War, Giuseppe Ostuni and his family lived with his brother Angelo in Milan. There, Giuseppe started to repair lampshades that had been damaged during the war. New lampshades were made with limited resources, all by hand, due to the lack of available materials. As an autodidact, he designed modern and convenient lighting through intense study and ‘learning by doing’. Soon after, Giuseppe set up his own workshop in 1947, and in 1948 he officially registered his company ‘O-LUCE’. Together with his brother Angelo, who made a great part of the lighting drawings, he worked on numerous designs and worked together with leading designers as Franco Buzzi, Tito Angoli...
