Mirror by George J. Sowden, Memphis 1986

About the Item

Mirror designed by George J. Sowden in the 1980s stands as a testament to his innovative approach to design. As a co-founder of the groundbreaking Memphis group alongside luminaries like Ettore Sottsass, Sowden was instrumental in spearheading an iconoclastic movement that shattered the norms of traditional design. His avant-garde sensibility merged geometric forms, vibrant motifs, and cutting-edge materials. This wall mirror, crafted from white lacquered wood, showcases Sowden's penchant for blending geometric shapes to create an anthropomorphic silhouette. The juxtaposition with the black lacquered wood accents, boasting more organic contours, adds a compelling contrast. Produced in a limited edition for the magazine La Donna, it serves as a tribute to the journalists associated with the publication. However, its commemorative nature meant that it was never made commercially available. Handwritten signature on the back : George T Sowden 1986 Édition : La donna Magazine, circa 1986, small edition.
