Hector Aguilar
Hector Aguilar was born in 1905, he apprenticed under William Spratling at a young age, and by the age of 30, he was the top shop manager for William Spratling. Inspired by Aztec and Mextex art, Aguilar preferred to work with purer silver (rated at 940 rather than the customary 925 of Sterling Silver). Gifted with a keen business sense as well as his artistic ability, and due to wartime shortages in the US, Aguilar was able to secure a contract with the American costume jewelry company Coro in 1943, to produce silver jewelry, supplying Coro with unique Mexican designs until 1950. In 1948, Aguilar opened the Taller Borda, which quickly became one of the premier retail silver outlets in Taxco, where they offered the highest quality fine silver jewelry, hollowware and flatware that was produced at the Aguilar workshops.

Signed on the back: Ken Beldin. In excellent vintage condition. The pendant measures: 3" H x 2 1/4" W. The necklace chain is made of copper, shells, beads, and leather and is approximately 20" total length. The pendant bears a lovely green patina and hangs from the original chain. Ken Beldin (1900-?) was born in Mississippi and was educated at U. of C. Berkeley. He retired as head of a successful ad agency in Los Angeles in 1931 to travel through the Southwest. He worked for a time with Mexico’s National Railways attracting tourists to travel to Mexico by rail and was drawn into the rugged beauty of Mexico and its people. He set up a studio in Tenencingo South of Mexico City near Taxco and began creating one of a kind jewelry and sculpture. He was the custodian of a collection of archeological Pre-Columbian stones, and it was from these he derived his motifs. His "modern Ethnic" jewelry was considered to have the most feeling and the most authentic look of the Period. He worked throughout the 1940s and 1950s with copper, brass, steel, wood and leather. His work was admired and collected by some of the elite of Hollywood including Barbara Hutton, Edward G. - Antique Art Deco Sterling Silver Three-Piece Christening SetLocated in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon TyneAn exceptional, fine and impressive antique George VI English sterling silver christening set in the Art Deco style, boxed; an addition to our collection of silver christening gifts. This exceptional antique George VI sterling silver christening set consists of a napkin ring, an egg cup and a spoon. The surfaces of the napkin ring and egg cup are plain and embellished with applied crown motifs incorporating the date ‘1937’ and initials ‘GVI’*. The plain rounded egg cup is ornamented with an elongated indented border to the pedestal and is supported by a stepped octagonal foot, all in the Art Deco style. The napkin ring has a plain quadrilateral shaped form with a convex curved anterior surface, bearing the aforementioned motif. The spoon is embellished with the engraved initials ‘GVI’ amidst collared bands to the stem and features an impressive crown shaped terminal. The reverse surface of the spoon is plain and features a tapering heel to the bowl. The pieces of this antique Art Deco style christening set are fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with a push fit catch. The anterior maroon leatherette surface of the box cover is embellished with a central cream panel encompassed with a gold scrolling border and accented with the royal cypher depicting ‘GVIR, 1937’ below the royal coronet. The interior of the cover bears the retailer’s mark ‘By appointment to H.M The King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent Street, London, W.1’. This impressive christening set was crafted by the renowned and highly collectable silversmith Robert Edgar Stone; the posterior surface of the napkin ring bears R. E. Stone’s signature in addition to the full hallmarks. Each component of this set will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the egg cup and napkin ring are struck with the date letter ‘b’ and the spoon bears ‘a’.
