Antique Painted Wood Five-Panel Folding Screen in the Japonisme Style
About the Item
The front side of this French Japonisme folding screen has a fine oil depiction on wood of kabuki (typical Japanese opera) performers, one on each of the five panels; the reverse of the screen has fabric panels with painted depictions of Japanese landscape scenes and vases with multi-colored flowers on a red background. As the final touch, the five screens are set in a parcel gilt wooden frame, painted red. The screen is inscribed 'Henry Castelnau' on the front side.
The term Japonism was first used in the 1870s, and initially referred to the academic study and appreciation of Japanese art and creative talent. However, the impact of this field of study was pervasive, and Japonism soon began to influence both the visual and decorative arts of European culture. Elements of traditional Japanese design became incorporated into works of British and French furniture, resulting in an innovative fusion of styles that remained popular well into the 20th Century. Stylistically, Japonism features tropes such as flatness, brilliant color, and a high degree of stylization, combined to depict realist subject matter.
