Marco Comolli "CP1" Lounge Chair for ICF De Padova, Italy, 1960s
About the Item
The design of the “CP1” dates to 1963, an era when experimentation with new forms and materials was still ongoing in Italy. The results - as demonstrated by these chairs - preserved the sculptural forms and luxurious features that Italian design has been known for centuries.
The design of this pair is focused on elegant and measured proportions, balanced compositions, and refined décor elements including the exclusive materials. The straight lines of the leather slat backs and the curved shape of the frames exemplify this balance. Marco Comolli’s design language was always coherent with current times and congenial to the wisdom of furniture manufacturing, representing an outpost of strong innovation in the panorama of Italian craftsmanship. His pieces have a clear preoccupation with wood, and here the pairing of the beautiful wooden frames with the upholstered seats and back cushions show off both materials’ elegance. The solid wood frame and leather interact with each other uniquely, as most of the backrests and seats are made from the latter material. The patinated leather straps go through the black stained wooden parts creating a strong contrast and a rustic impression. The beauty of the wood in return is showed off on the crossing sides manifested in the flowing curves. The elegant aesthetic is completed by the voluptuous seat and back cushions upholstered in black leather. Their thickness is accentuated by the deep button tufting arranged in a square pattern. From the leather strapping to the unique frame and cushions, these lounge chairs are sure to draw all the attention.
Like their international contemporaries, Italian designers prized the marriage of form and function, but there are a few key differences that set Italian mid-century design apart. In Italy, good design was generally defined by unique forms, perfect execution, and a strong sense of exclusivity.

- PLR1 Luar lounge chair by Ross Littell for ICF De Padova Italy 1960s, set of 2By Ross LittellLocated in Stavenisse, NLRoss F. Littell (July 14, 1924 – April 17, 2000) was an American textile and furniture designer known for his practical, innovative, and minimalist style as part of the good design movement of the 1950s. His three-legged T-chair, designed in 1952 with William Katavolos and Douglas Kelley, is part of several permanent museum collections. Littell, born and raised in Los Angeles, attended the Art Center School in Los Angeles and finished his education with honour in 1946. In 1947, he was awarded a scholarship to study in Italy. It was during these period that Littell became increasingly interested in architecture and design. In 1949 Littell formed a partnership with William Katavolos and Douglas Kelley. During their six-year partnership, they designed furniture, along with textiles and dinnerware, for Laverne Originals in New York, using materials such as leather, glass, chrome, and marble. In a later stage Littell did work autonomously as well for several furniture companies, mostly for Knoll International and Herman Miller. An interesting fact is that the PLR1 lounge chair, designed in 1965, was actually designed for Herman Miller. ICF, an Italian manufacturer from Milan, produced a lot of Herman Miller designs for the Italian market in license, and started producing the PLR1 as well for the Italian market but only for the De Padova shop, a luxury chain of design furniture shops in Italy with a strong emphasis on Scandinavian design. Hence, the PLR1 has therefore a very interesting history. Rendered in slick chromed steel and beige fabric straps, the chair is a particularly stylish take on a slipper chair with a low, angled seat and curvy frame extending into two trestle legs that extend far out horizontally. The four protective feet are deliberately blocky plastic cubes...Category
