Svante Skogh "Pallas" Lounge Chairs for Asko, Finland, 1950s
About the Item
This pair of spectacular “Pallas” chairs by Swedish designer, Svante Skogh dates to 1954 and is a rather rare example of the interior and furniture designer’s repertoire. With a creative and masterfully crafted wooden structure, these lounge chairs praise both Skogh and Asko.
These chairs combine function and aesthetic masterfully, keeping the form in service of the user while maintaining an elegant and modern look. The union of the shell-shaped, upholstered bodies and the sculpted wooden structures define this pair. The bodies “sit” on the black painted frames, as if the wood was constructed over the shells. This shows the Swedish design’s and the Finnish manufacturing’s quality. The chairs are slightly raised towards the front, which is further accentuated by the armrests. Together with the seat cushions, this angle assures great sitting comfort, a feature that Scandinavian designers were particularly concerned with. The legs not only support the bodies, but also rise to form the support for the armrests. The clean lines of the black painted birchwood contrast beautifully with the bodies upholstered in a grey wool blend fabric, giving the pair an open and very photographic appearance. Due to the well-chosen proportions, colour scheme and angled profiles, these lounge chairs are uniquely elegant.
Asko - Finland’s market leading furniture manufactory from the 1930s - worked with many renowned Scandinavian designers during the mid-century era, among them Swedish master, Svante Skogh. These “Pallas” lounge chairs were manufactured together with a sofa during the 1950s, and remain quite rare.

About the designer:
Swedish furniture designer Svante Skogh is best known for his mid-century designs produced by many of the most renowned Scandinavian manufacturers, among them Asko Finland, Seffle (sometimes written as Säffle) Möbelfabrik, and Klings Alingsås. Throughout his career in the 1950s and 1960s, he worked with a number of furniture producers.
Despite his famous designs, not a lot is known about the designer. His designs ranged from coffee tables to seating, such as his famous Bodö Series from 1957. Many of Skogh’s designs have survived and are highly sought after on the vintage market today. ~H.

- “Laila” Armchairs by Ilmari Lappalainen 'Attr.' for Asko, Finland, 1950sBy Asko, Ilmari LappalainenLocated in Utrecht, NLThe “Laila” model by the Finnish designer Ilmari Lappalainen originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection. This pair of “nr. 238” armchairs are from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushion and back with tufted buttons. The bodies have the classic Nordic look, which explains the contemporary popularity of these armchairs both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well. Sheepskin is the ultimate material for comfort, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It elevates the sheer size and shape of the chair, especially its back. Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930 the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. After the war, the damage it caused and the new homes of Karelian migrants concentrated production on essential furniture, which the Finnish Ministry of Public Affairs ordered to sell at an affordable price. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s Laila...Category

- "Laila" Sofa by Ilmari Lappalainen for Asko, Finland, 1950sBy Asko, Ilmari LappalainenLocated in Utrecht, NLThe “Laila” models from the series by the Finnish designer Ilmari Lappalainen originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection. Designed in the halcyon phase of what we know today as mid-century modern, this charming sofa is a unique evidence of how traditional Finnish craftsmanship was brought into modernism. This sofa is from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating that it prevented back problems. As an essentially Finnish modern piece, this sofa is built around the core characteristics of the era: gently rounded edges, tapered wooden legs, and a generous, fully upholstered body. The style was modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushion and back with three large tufted buttons. In the absence of ornamentation, the three large tufted buttons on the back stand out, creating depth as they sink into the textured green fabric. The design has the “classic Nordic look”, which explains the contemporary popularity of this sofa both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well. Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions.
