Danish 1940s Sofa in Lambswool with Armrests in Carved Elm by Alfred Christensen
About the Item
Fantastic 1940s Alfred Christensen designed sofa in his characteristic style of semi-open armrests carved from solid elm wood and made by Slagelse Mobelvaerk in the 1940s. Beautiful refined lines with curving arms, coil springs in the seat and backrest. Some wear and the patina to the lacquer mainly on the armrests that we have gently restored. We have re-upholstered the sofa in a brand new lambswool of 100% merino that looks and feels like shearling and retains many of the same properties. The sofas stands fully refurbished and reupholstered in new-like condition.

- Alfred Christensen Three-Seater Sofa for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940sBy Alfred ChristensenLocated in Utrecht, NLDanish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...Category
