Ghanaian Ashanti 'Wisdom Knot' stool, Africa, Mid-20th Century
About the Item
In cedar wood.
An African carved wooden stool having a curved seat raised on two intertwined carved wooden supports with a thin plinth base. Ghanaian tradition explains that the central symbol carved into this cedar stool is a knot of wisdom. Only wise people can unravel it, so the Ashanti stool is reserved for authority figures such as a chief.

- Geometric Ashanti African StoolLocated in Chicago, ILAn indicator of status and family, stools play an integral role in traditional Ashanti culture. Carved from a solid block of wood, each stool has a rectangular base and a distinctive curved seat supported by a central column and four corner posts. While some ceremonial stools are carved to convey particular proverbs, this stool is simply decorated with scalloped edges, geometric patterns, and a small cross.
