18th Century Italian Cassone with Hand Painted Leather Top and Carved-Paw Feet
About the Item
An Italian trunk with hand painted leather top from the 18th century. This antique cassone from Italy features a recessed panel top with leather painted in a floral motif adorning the top. The front has a rectangular recessed panel flanked within a pair of carved plaques, and each side has a single recessed panel with iron pulls at center. The trunk is raised handsomely on front paw feet, which extend outward from under the cabinet, and bracket feet raise the back. We are unsure if the painted leather top is original to this piece or not, but if it is not original, it is still quite old; likely older than the trunk itself. Please note that the back and bottom have been repaired or replaced at one point. The backside of this 18th century Italian case piece remains un-adorn, so best use would be against a wall or foot of bed.
