Robert Salleroli was born July 29, 1933 Childhood spent in Paterson, N.J. Moved to New York City in 1954. Graduated with honors from Parsons School of Design in 1957. Worked as interior designer for several years with well known designers including such as Dorothy Draper, Yale Burge, Michael Greer, David Barret and others. Opened design office in 1967 in New York City. Acquired art studio and workshop in Hawthorne, N.J. in 1989
Robert Salleroli's art constructions began with the concept of designing furniture using 1/2" diameter birch dowels. This concept eventually developed into a complete line of forty five designs, which included cocktail tables, consoles, mirrors, desks, benches, screens, dining and game tables. There was even a dining chair that looks more like a piece of sculpture than something one would sit on. The line is made up of pieces constructed almost entirely of the birch dowels glued together over an under structure of plywood. Mr. Salleroli holds a patent on the construction process and although the basic concept appears relatively simple, the finished designs are anything but. The surfaces on most of his pieces consists of thousands of dowels clustered together to create an intricate honeycomb effect, which is most unique. A 60-inch round dining table, for instance, incorporates 30,000 dowels in its top. The designer claims to have used one hundred and forty million dowels since he began this process a few years ago. Many of his designs make use of inlay patterns for the top surface using red, pine and other species of wood and metals. A sunburst mirror is made almost entirely of jelly apple sticks radiating from a ring of round wooden discs creating a very exciting and unusual design.
As a result of the huge success of this furniture line with the trade showrooms supplying designers and architects, Mr. Salleroli began to be further inspired to create wooden art constructions based on a similar principle. Many of the sculptures also incorporate birch dowels together with found wood objects. One large round wall piece consists of hundreds of wooden ice pick handles. Mr. Salleroli's art constructions are included in many private collections throughout the country and abroad. He has also done several special commissions for architects and designers, including one natural wood piece for Texas A & M University which is two hundred feet long and twelve feet high. His artwork and furniture come together in one piece he calls the Art Construction…a coffee table which is a deep well design filled with an elaborate mixture of clements covered in clear glass. Many people inspection this piece have remarked that it looks like an aerial view of San Francisco. Over four hundred of his art works have been sold over the last several years and his ongoing commitment is still the design potential and utilization of common and discarded wood products and lately the use of aluminum cans and even the yellow pages of the telephone book
