Louis XVI Satinwood Roll Top Desk by Macret - Stamped - 18th Century circa 1780
About the Item
Louis XVI mahogany roll top desk, ormolu ornamentation, France, late 18th century, circa 1780.
Roll top desks were created at the end of Louis XV reign ; they are mechanical pieces of furniture, which allows - once closed - to keep the work spread on the desktop confidential.
Stamp of Pierre Macret - stamped twice on a crosstie.
Pierre Macret was a great Parisian cabinet maker under Louis XV reign and supplier to the Royal Family. Most of his work are Louis XV pieces : the success he met made him live a life of luxury at the end of his career ; he stopped his activity in 1785.
He made a few Louis XVI pieces though : our desk is one of them.
The finish is much refined :
- veneer on the four faces to allow to place the desk in the middle of a room
- the luxury satinwood is used on the whole piece (it would normally be only a part of a marquetry at this time) and flat surfaces everywhere, both details making the desk look ahead of its time and remind some of French Art Deco productions 150 years later
- sober but elegant ormolu ornamentation on the drawers and angles
Reasonable width, easy to place : our desk in not wider than a regular Louis XVI commode.
In very good condition, a new varnish made in a traditional way, original leather inside. Some old repairs. Very nice piece of collection.

- Pair of Tall Empire silver plate Candelabras by JG Galle - early 19th centuryBy Gérard-Jean GalleLocated in GRENOBLE, FRRare pair of silver plate bronze candelabras, early 19th century production (Empire period). Beautiful Louis XVI style model, elegant proportions, 2 to 3 lights each (you can turn the center piece over to get a third light). They are composed of 17 independent parts each (the more there are, the higher the quality). The bottom part looks exactly like an ormolu pair of candlesticks exhibited at chateau de Fontainebleau, listed in a book dedicated to bronze items that came into the castle under Emperor Napoleon's reign (last picture, the left candlestick). This books testifies that the ormolu pair has probably been delivered there by Claude Galle in 1807. Our pair is a variant of this pair of candlesticks : - silver plate instead of gilt bronze - the candelabra part on top Early 19th century work attributed to Gerard Jean Galle...Category
