COUNTRY STYLE

Functional pieces made with local materials that can stand the test of time have defined antique and vintage country furniture around the world.

Country style has varied based on regional tastes, from French Country with tufted sofas and cane-framed beds to American Country with stately Windsor chairs and tables built of pine. Each is imbued with touches that are often described as rustic, a style that is inclusive of a range of decorating modes such as country and farmhouse. Exposed wood, traditional fabrics, natural colors and a sense of heritage through distressed surfaces and handcrafted design are all attributes of country-style interiors.

Country furniture and decor can encompass movements from across centuries that reflect rural life, such as French Provincial, which emerged in the 17th century, Black Forest, which became popular in early-19th-century Switzerland with sculptural furniture carved with animals and Adirondack style, with chairs that debuted in the United States in the early 20th century and became a rustic favorite.

The design of country-style furniture isn’t guided by fleeting trends or elite tastes. Sofas upholstered with animal hide, desks made of oak or pine that show off the grain of their material and dining room tables balanced on sturdy square legs are all popular examples of country furniture. Although the aesthetics of country furniture are eclectic, the pieces are unified by meticulous construction that favors utility over ornamentation.

Contemporary country interiors usually have muted palettes, with white walls and calming shades of blue, where heirloom pieces mingle with vintage baskets and gingham textiles. Unpretentious and timeless, country furniture adds warmth to any home, whether it’s a cabin in the woods or an urban loft apartment.

French Pâtisserie Boulangerie Bakery or Bistro Display by Siégel et Hommey Paris
Located in Chicago, IL
French Pâtisserie Boulangerie (Bakery) or Possibly a French Bistro Brass Shelf Retail Display. Our Old Plank Restoration Department just finished a thorough restoration of our polished brass 3-shelf display stand with custom fabricated solid walnut shelves. The inlay on the walnut shelves has also been crafted from solid brass and the shelves are easily adjustable. The Brass vertical tubing was made from heavy solid brass, while most of the Bistro, or Bakery shelving display stands we have imported were hollow brass tubes. This is just an indicator of the high-quality of the manufacturing process which was probably from the 1920’s and made by Siégel et Hommey, vitrines étalages, 13, Rue de la Chine, Paris. There are many company’s manufacturing copies of these popular French decorative brass display shelves...

Antique Cupboard from Ireland Great Patina Unrestored Original Paint, C1800's
Located in Chicago, IL
The Antique Cupboard that was removed from a home we believe may have been in Scotland. The Antique Cabinet, or Cupboard was located in Ireland, but upon cleaning out the Antique Painted Cupboard, we found receipts from the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland dated 1967. Certainly not definitive, however, the cabinet is absolutely from the British Isles and more than that, is the fact that no one has attempted to restore, or worse yet, refinish the cupboard. The Patina of Old Original Paint is quite impressive and I only wish we could duplicate it. This Painted Antique Cupboard...

Country English Pastry Shop Potential Kitchen Island, Marble Top All Original
Located in Chicago, IL
Located just outside the Cotswold’s in England, we were fortunate enough to discover this incredible all original marble topped pastry kitchen island, with an old cream painted wooden frame, with a slatted undertier. Finding old, completely unmolested, all original tables that can be substituted for a modern generic new kitchen island, is something that we, at Old Plank have specialized in for over 30-years. The trick has always been to locate an antique potential kitchen island, that was used commercially, yet finished on all four-sides and if you’re real lucky, it’ll have a marble top.
