Future Fossils Low Table in Stoneware and Aluminum by Simon Johns
About the Item
The most expressive of the Future Fossils collection, the low table features slip-cast volumes of stoneware, each loosely mimicking the textures of sedimentary stone. Of varying shapes and sizes, they are organized around a polished aluminum volume that reflects the light from the room. An aluminum top and bottom contain these forms within a perimeter dictated by the ceramic shapes.
About the Future Fossils Collection:
The Future Fossils Collection was launched in May of 2022 and won Best Furniture at ICFF 2022.
Future Fossils is a collection of new works by Simon Johns, using mimicry in materials, loosely referencing the sedimentary striations in million years old stone. This collection explores positives and negatives of both extrusions and voids, in both gypsum cement and slip-cast stoneware. The traces of natural looking elements are preserved into mold-like volumes, structured into aluminum grids and more free-form geometries. The pieces are really furniture, but also seem like documents, celebrating the traces of something lost.

Simon Johns
Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.

- Hex Diamond Table in White Oak and Aluminum by Simon JohnsBy Simon JohnsLocated in East-Bolton, QuebecThe hex diamond table’s slight angles focus guests around a middle point that can accommodate a centerpiece. The traditional circular approach to seating guests is deconstructed to encourage more dynamic exchanges between people. The surface plays tribute to the approximate geometries of stones, reminiscent of, but not quite a hexagon. The central base is equally asymmetrical, made up of an assembly of soft rectangular columns of different dimensions, congregating, as do the unique individuals around the table. The base is offered in all oak or oak and aluminum. The aluminum is hand polished to a satin finish, wrapped around and supported by a thick plywood form. This table is perfect for 3-6 people. *Also available in oblong shapes, at 82, 95 and 105" in length. Custom lengths also available upon request. The Diamond collection congregates similar but unique forms into constructions that celebrate subtle differences. There is intent and organization in the results, but also a desire for some freedom from symmetry or rigid guidelines. Composed of different tables and soon a sideboard, this collection uses primarily white oak, either alone, or paired with aluminum, hand polished to a satin finish. - MDF Italia Cement Fossil Low Table Indoor / Outdoor by Xavier LustBy MDF ItaliaLocated in New York, NYThe Belgian designer and sculptor Xavier Lust signs Fossil for MDF Italia, an eclectic furnishing accessory that can be used as a low table. A highly versatile design for a family of elements, revisited with more rounded, fluid lines. Built in lightweight concrete, it is suitable for use both indoors and outside, sporting a delicate, neutral finish echoing the nuances of an organic, natural universe. Cement UHPFRC (ultra-high performance fibre-reinforced cement) with cutting-edge technical/structural properties. A fundamental characteristic of the components is mass colouration. The finish and colour of the table bases is the result of a skilled mixture of sand and natural elements. Together with the slow maturation and drying given to each piece, this allows countless subtle shades to be obtained. The combination of this particular material and the maturation process, which is affected by weather changes, may result in visual irregularities in the design and in the colour. The subtle shades and the lack of uniformity in surface and colour are to be considered unique properties enhancing the value of the piece. The Belgian designer and sculptor is again joining forces with the brand, in an eclectic furnishing accessory that can be used as a low table. A highly versatile design for a family of elements, revisited with more rounded, fluid lines. Fossil is a sinuous element in three different sizes and heights. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Its curved lines are in stark contrast with the white cement finish it is made of. Dimension • Fossil S...Category
