Early Pierre Chapo T21D Dining Table with Afra & Tobia Scarpa Monk Chairs

About the Item

Dining set with Pierre Chapo T21D dining table paired with Afra and Tobia Scarpa Monk chairs. Pierre Chapo, dining table, model 'T21D', solid elm, France, 1970s This table is one of the early editions designed by Pierre Chapo, known for his hallmark use of solid elmwood and a commitment to pure and clean design and construction principles. This round 'T21D' dining table is designed by Pierre Chapo and its table top has a diameter of 140 cm (55 in.). The shape of the base creates a very dynamic look. The perfectly made solid wood joints, also shown on the side of the top with double connection are made of solid elmwood, are true Chapo trademark. The round top beautifully exposes the grain of the elmwood, giving this table a natural character. Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) was born in a family of craftsmen and trained as an architect at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Already from a young age, he felt the need to roam the world. He was only twenty-one when he left France in order to spend the next few years traveling through England and Scandinavia. In December of 1951, he was living back in Paris, where he met his future wife, Nicole. Their meeting was the beginning of a lifelong union. Together, the lovebirds travelled through South and North America being captivated by the architectural diversity. Back in France, he and his partner Nicole set up Société Chapo in 1957. Société Chapo was a design workshop and gallery in one where he showed his own creations. However, Nicole also presented her ceramics, and textiles here and they even exhibited other great designers of that period. In 1958, they opened their famous gallery at 14 Boulevard de l'Hopital. Chapo's work originated by means of special commissions that could later be adapted to universal needs. Throughout his career, Chapo combined his interest for contemporary design with his love for traditional craftsmanship. In his designs, he was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's balanced lines, Corbusier's research on proportions and the ideas of Bauhaus. The three principles that motivated Pierre Chapo were 'material, form, and function.' He measured his furniture by means of golden ratio and used elmwood as his preferred material. Unfortunately, Chapo fell ill, and he died in 1987, however, until his last day, he kept on designing and working. Dimensions table: Height 72 W 139 Diameter 139 cm / H 28.35 D 54.72 in. Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Molteni, set of six 'Monk' dining chairs, walnut, leather, Italy, 1974. Set of six 'Monk' chairs by Italian designers Afra & Tobia Scarpa. The black leather forms a striking combination with the warm tone of the walnut wood. Interesting is the 'flat' shape of this chair where the designer has chosen to place the legs cross-angled. This constructive feature gives the chair the appearance of being light-weight, whilst in fact they are very solid and heavy. Another interesting detail is use of nails on the top of each leg, which are executed in a black dark color. All in all, a very interesting and high-quality chair. Simplified and solid design by Italian award winning designers couple Afra & Tobia Scarpa. Afra (1937-2011) & Tobia (1935-) Scarpa are a duo of Italian architects and designers mostly known for their postmodern style. Afra Bianchin was born in 1937 in Montebelluna while Tobia Scarpa, son of the architect Carlo Scarpa, was born in 1935 in Venice. The couple met when they were both studying at the Venice Institute of Architecture and married afterwards. From 1957 until 1961, Tobia worked as a glass designer at the Murano glassworks of Venini. However, in 1960, the duo started to collaborate, and they set up one of the most successful and well-known professional studios. Together, they worked for companies such as Flos Gavina, B&B Italia, and Knoll. The couple won numerous amounts of awards like the Compasso d’Oro and the International Forum Design. Throughout their career, the duo carried out commissions for well-known companies, including Benetton. Overall, their designs are known for their modernist aesthetic, prioritizing elegance and comfort. However, at the same time, their pieces are admired for the ease with which they lean towards classical designs. Moreover, the creations show their deep understanding for materials. Today, many of their works can be found in major museums such as Museum of Modern Art of New York, Musée du Louvre, National Museum of Design New York and many more. Kindly take note that the leather is in good, used condition with signs of age and use, including wear and a few loose seams. Reupholstery or restoration is possible before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier.
