Urzúa, Black Cantera Stone, Regionalism Revival Side Table from Jalisco, México
About the Item
This side table is inspired by the work of Rafael Urzúa (1905-1991), an architect from Jalisco whose work often featured references to Mediterranean and Arabic typologies as two of the most direct influences of traditional Mexican architecture. Urzúa was a colleague and close friend of Luis Barragán during their early years as architects.
Cantera is a type of tuff rock -classified as both igneous and sedimentary- that has been widely used across Mexico, especially for construction during the colonial period. Since cantera can be found in a variety of colors, many colonial cities are associated with the particular hue that was used for its architecture. This model can also be custom made in white, pink or yellow cantera.
The vases are carved with both manual and electrical tools by the Íñiguez family in Yahualica de González Gallo, Jalisco. Small imperfections can be found in the vases, due to the nature of the material and the artisanal process. Lighter hues (white and pink) can develop patina. These factors may contribute to a long-term ruin-like look, which is part of the design concept. Dark grey cantera may present some small, shiny, crystal-like grains.
