Contemporary Fiber Art Installation by Chen Qingqing
About the Item
A fiber art installation by Chinese artist Chen Qingqing (1953-), called "Clothing, from Artificial Artifact Series-Flower" was created in 2004 and purchased from Plum Blossom Gallery in NYC in 2005.
A leading female artist in China, Chen Qingqing is known for her construction of female robes with intricate layers of natural fibers such as grass and hemp and dried flowers. Her works are rooted in a deep Chinese tradition aesthetically but distinct in their philosophical message that probe into the gender identity in a largely patriarchal society. The unique artistic language the artist employs itself reflects an ambiguity in its duality, ephemeral versus timeless, fragile versus preservation.
The robe is mounted on a blue padded fabric background and installed in a Lucite shadow box. Signed and dated on the back of the frame as shown "Qingqing, 2004.9 Dashanzi, Beijing" (Dashanzhi was here the artist's studio located).
The artist's detail biography and CV can be seen on artnet and other online sources.
