Harold Mesibov
Harold Mesibov was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of an artist and younger brother of the artist Hugh Mesibov. Both of the Mesibov brothers studied at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. They were personally connected with Albert Barnes and both studied painting at the Barnes Foundation. Mesibov left Philadelphia to fight in the Korean War. When he returned, he continued his art studies at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture and Philadelphia Museum School of Art. By 1953, Mesibov had chosen the style of Geometric Abstraction, which he then developed throughout his career. In his early career, he signed his works Mesa to separate himself from the fame of his brother Hugh. Later in his life, after his work became known, he returned to his full signature, Harold Mesibov. He ran a very successful private art school in Philadelphia and was an officer of the Philadelphia Chapter of Artists Equity International. Mesibov work was exhibited from the 50s onward in New York City and Philadelphia avant-garde venues. His one-man shows included the Panoros Gallery, New York City, the Philadelphia Gallery and The Springs, East Hampton, New York. His group shows include the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Tyler University, Penn State University, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the University City Arts League, the Philadelphia Abstract Artist, The Plastic Club, The Pyramid Club, the Artists Equity, Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Arts Festivals and The Medici Gallery, Miami, Florida. According to Mesibov, "he painted in an a la prima fashion and put the abstracted figure in spatial arrangements."
