"Livestock Farm Scene, " WPA Mural Study with Farmhands Handling Hay and Feed
About the Item
This classic example of Social Realist art was painted by Rollin Crampton as a study for a WPA mural -- perhaps never executed -- in the 1930s, when he was served as supervisor of the New York City WPA (Works Progress Administration) Art Project during the depths of the Great Depression. Like many of his contemporaries, Crampton celebrated the American farm -- and farm worker -- in this painting, depicting an array of activities that seem to revolve around livestock production. To the left, a worker is pouring feed into a wheelbarrow, and to the right another worker is mastering a large sheaf of hay next to a water trough. Another two workers seem to be repairing a length of metal, perhaps the outer rim of one of the cart's wheels, shown behind. The entire composition has a lovely, muted color scheme, probably from the use of tempera paint over gessoed panel. Crampton later became known for his abstract painting, but the foundation of his career was laid when he was deeply immersed in the WPA. (Dimensions include frame.)

This served as a study for one of five large canvases she delivered to California in 1941 or 1942, but the building was cordoned off due to America's entrance into World War II. Burkhardt (or Burkhard) was the daughter of two important artists and was introduced to painting and crafts at an early age. In her prime, she won seven U.S. Government mural commissions in national competitions for buildings in Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. She settled in Grand Junction...Category
