"Pila and the Lizard, " Important Unpublished Manuscript, 12 Art Deco Watercolors
About the Item
A remarkable find, this original manuscript for an unpublished book, "Pila and the Lizard," along with cover art and a total of 12 Art Deco watercolors painted to illustrate the book, were created by Robert Lee Eskridge. The artist's books and paintings probably did more to acquaint the American public with the beauty and legends of Hawaii and the South Pacific before World War II than any other single artist. "Umi" and "Manga Reva" continue to be classics today, and "Pila and the Lizard" would have joined their ranks, had it been published. The manuscript tells the story of a young man who visits his grandmother and hears tales of legendary Hawaiian figures, who come alive at night and spirit him away to an island that most humans cannot visit. Eskridge painted 12 watercolors to accompany the text, some very sketchy and others fully realized, and all in full Art Deco glory.
