Elena Lyakir Wind Photograph, Land and Sea Series, 2008

About the Item

Contemporary New York artist Elena Lyakir's Wind was photographed in 2008 and is part of her Land and Sea Series. This is a meditation on the essence of seeing the world through our respective filter. Each photograph is closely connected to personal sentiments and self-discovery — manifesting inner landscapes. Perceiving the world through one’s lens reveals a ruminative expression of the self, simultaneously appropriating reality. The images in this series are not fragments of what is but rather painterly abstractions, facilitating an altered sense of reality and contemplating our relationship with seeing and a visceral connection to our surroundings. This photograph is archival pigment print face-mounted onto 1/4” heavy matte acrylic. With an aluminum back and French cleat for hanging. It will ship directly from the artist's printmaking studio with a signed certificate of authenticity to the collector. Artist's Biography: Raised in communist Ukraine and influenced by mysticism and nostalgia of Soviet cinematography and literature, Elena developed a passion for photography as a young child. In 1990 she immigrated to rural U.S. with her family, seeking political asylum, and at 18 she arrived in New York City alone, impressionable, and adrift. Fascinated by the culture, energy, and ingenuity of the city, she first tried to make ends meet by working as a model and assisting photographers. In 1995 Elena found herself swept away by the vibrant avant-garde art scene of the Lower East Side and creating art became her passion and purpose. She started using large format and toy film cameras and eventually studied photography at MSFA but her unorthodox approach to the medium and adverse childhood experiences with oppressive authority in Ukraine impelled Elena to continue pursuing her art through independent studies and experimentation. Elena’s work is included in private and corporate collections. She has exhibited in galleries and art fairs in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Berlin, Paris, Lille, Sydney, and Istanbul and continues to produce commissioned work for collectors and boutique hospitality brands around the globe.

    By Vivienne Westwood
    Located in London, GB
An original one-off large format Polaroid photograph of Bob Geldoff & Jeanne Marine for the Vivienne Westwood Active Resistance limited edition book produced by Opus. Photographer Zenon Texeira. Signed by Bob Geldoff & Jeanne Marine in marker pen. Large-format polaroids are extremely rare and unique and as the name suggests, they are of a large scale, the visible image dimensions being 52 cm x 67 cm. It is an autographed and one-off, unreproducible photograph, as there is no negative. Large Format Polaroids: The Polaroid 20×24 camera is a very large instant camera made by Polaroid, with film plates that measure a nominal 20 by 24 inches. Throughout its history, it has been used by many famous photographers, including Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. Ansel Adams also used the camera, notably to make the first official photographic Presidential portrait, of President Jimmy Carter in 1979. To celebrate Lady Gaga's new role as Creative Director of Polaroid, a portrait of her was shot with the 20×24 camera on June 30, 2010, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This is the actual one-off Large Format Polaroid Photo taken on one of three of these cameras in existence which are soon to be obsolete because no more of the photographic paper can be made. The rare Polaroid 20 x 24 camera was brought from Prague to Paris and London for three separate photo shoots for The Official Vivienne Westwood Opus. Featuring Vivienne Westwood’s family and friends wearing clothes from her stunning collections, 97 selected Polaroids, shot by Zenon Texeira in black-and-white, colour and sepia, are displayed in the Opus.
