About the Item
This is a vintage travel poster, printed for the Pennsylvania Railroad, by Einson-Freeman Co., New York. The poster depicts the iconic United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. The text “Washington” appears at the top of the poster in yellow. The poster urges viewers to “Go by Train, Pennsylvania Railroad” at the bottom of the poster.
The Pennsylvania Railroad was founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the “Pennsy,” the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad in the U.S. for the entire first half of the twentieth century, and was an extremely passenger-oriented railroad. Train travel allowed Americans the ability to leave their towns, head into a city, or escape from it as needed. Finally the general public could entertain the notion of vacations, via affordable weekend train escapes.
During this boom in train travel, countless posters were created to highlight the historic, cultural, and natural beauty of each destination. Often bright and exciting, these graphic posters would feature landmarks and key tourist spots, emphasizing the myriad of new places to explore. In this poster, viewers are encouraged to travel by train to visit the Capitol building, in Washington, D.C. This poster flaunts the building’s striking architecture, bathed in golden afternoon light.

- "Fort Worth" Vintage Delta Airlines Travel Poster by John Hardy, circa 1950sBy John Hardy (Artist)Located in Colorado Springs, COThis is a vintage Fort Worth travel poster for Delta Airlines, issued in the 1950s. A very collectible poster, the composition shows a man in a cowboy hat, set against a bright yellow background. The poster was designed by John Hardy. Delta Air Lines was founded in 1925 as a fleet of crop-dusting planes in the Mississippi River Delta, which is how it earned its name. Passenger flights began in 1929 across the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas area and grew over time, with offered flights across the country and eventually to international destinations. In 1959, Delta was the first airline to fly the Douglas DC-8 and it was also the first to fly the Convair 880 jet in 1960; two large moments in aviation history. A major airline in the United States, Delta has always invested in promotional print advertising, hiring numerous artists for magazines and poster work. In the 1950s and 60s, Delta hired artist John Hardy to create a series of hand-pulled silkscreen posters, highlighting some of their top destinations. These portrait-oriented posters...Category
