About the Item

A Victorian pietra dura and yellow gold suite, comprising a bracelet, a locket containing hairwork, a pair of earrings, and a pair of buttons, in polished hardstone and 9 karat yellow gold. This stunning Victorian suite is made from pietra dura, where coloured hardstone pieces are precisely cut to size and laid into a larger piece of stone, in a similar manner to mosaic, the pieces are then highly polished until glossy and smooth. First, the bracelet, a striking, chunky piece, with 7 rectangular panels of pietra dura, each depicting a different spray of flowers. The panels are joined with pairs of beaded links, creating a flexible bracelet, which is fastened by a substantial box clasp, which opens and closes positively. The earrings are in similar style, with rectangular panels dropping from gold beaded ear hooks, inlaid with matching floral sprays. The pair of buttons have square shaped panels and are inlaid with matching floral sprays, backed with yellow gold button fittings. The locket is oval in shape, inlaid with a hardstone lily, and the oval panel is set within a yellow gold bezel, suspended from a yellow gold jump ring. The back of the locket sports a glass covered panel, which holds hairwork arranged into a floral spray. The glass panel is surrounded by a stunning carved surround, complete with floral and scrolling motifs. The suite is held within a fitted case, lined with pale blue velvet and ivory silk, the lid sporting makers information “Giovanni Ugolini Co. Via Dei Fossi No. 11 Firenze” (a well-known maker of fine pietra dura work) in gold. This is an extremely unusual suite of jewellery, the execution of which is second to none, truly beautiful craftsmanship and a one-of-a-kind piece. The suite is in excellent condition with no inlay missing and no damage to any of the pieces, aside from one minuscule chip to the corner of one of the buttons. It is possibly missing a piece, perhaps a brooch, which would have fitted above the locket in the case. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
