Knoll and Pregizer Early 20th Century Tortoise and Hare Antique Collar Pins

About the Item

This exceptionally rare pair of pins were created in the early 20th century by the German high quality costume jewellery maker, Knoll and Pregizer. Condition Report: Very Good - There are a few stones which are showing some signs of dulling due to age. However, this is only apparent upon very close inspection and they do not detract from the appeal and rarity of the piece. The Details... This pair of brooches or collar pins are each constructed from silver and depict a tortoise and hare. They are set with small, round, colourless and ruby paste stones. They are linked together with a chain constructed from gilded base metal. The hare measures 3cm x 1cm and the tortoise measures 2cm x 1.5cm. The chain is 6cm. Both fastening pins attach to the brooches with round hinges and fasten with ‘c’ catches. The hare is stamped with 'KP' on the reverse, along with '925', which indicates sterling silver. Despite there being no mark on the tortoise, I believe that both brooches are by Knoll and Pregizer, as I have found stamped examples of the tortoise in my research. The marks on the back of the tortoise in the examples that I have found are normally located on the reverse of the head, but the fastening pin for the brooch has been placed here, so it’s possible it could be covering a stamp up. It should be noted that the fastening mechanisms on the reverse of both brooches are slightly different in appearance. This is perhaps due to one being made before the other and them then being assembled into collar pins at a later date. Wear it With... Brooches are an exceptionally simple way to add instant vintage styling to any look and interest to plain materials. Pin this piece onto a hat, lapel, collar, cuff, scarf, sleeve, waistline or bag - wear alone or with a selection.
