ArtDeco 491 ProngSetCrystals SchreinerStyle SilverSolder 35" Belt ChokerNecklace

About the Item

With settings and construction like Art Deco unsigned high-end crystal costume-jewelry by Bavarian-born blacksmith Henry Schreiner (1898-1954), this mid-century unsigned silver-soldered three-strand 35-inch-long piece with a prong-less buckle features 491 sparkling faceted foiled rhinestones that are each expertly prong set for a brilliant choker necklace with an end draping as long as 20 inches or for a versatile belt that can be adjusted to suit a high to low waist. More so, there are five decorative rectangular gaps in the middle of the colorfully-reflective strands near the end of the belt in which to insert the wide C-hook behind the buckle, which will accommodate a hip measurement of 29 to 32 inches. We posted a blurry photo of only the hip-positioned belt because it helps to show the rainbow-range of colors. Significantly, buckles and buttons were among the first crystal-adorned fashion items that Henry Schreiner handcrafted when he founded his American wholesale company in New York City in 1932. While it is likely that belts were among the multitude of costume jewelry that he anonymously created for leading mid-century fashion designers, ranging from ready-to-wear entrepreneur Norman Norell to couturier Christian Dior, the family business Schreiner New York that continued to operate after its founder's death at least made a considerable number of unsigned metal stretch-belts with faux-gem embellished buckles, according to notes about this convertible type of jewelry written to curious collectors by his late daughter Terry. But unlike our buckle, the described Schreiner buckle has a bail that can be converted into the dangling pendant of a necklace. Regardless of the talented person who handcrafted this belt/choker on par with documented mid-century couture ones by Gabriel "Coco" Chanel or Elsa Schiaparelli, its inspiration dates back to at least 1935 when internationally famous Fulco di Verdura created a buckled choker featuring aquamarines and rubies that was among his first pieces of jewelry as head designer for Hollywood-based jeweler Paul Flato, which was a commission by composer Cole Porter for his wife. Prior to this in Victorian times, Edwardian jewelry that Henry Schreiner would have been familiar with since childhood introduced diamond-encrusted belt buckles that could otherwise be worn with a ribbon as a choker. For optimum brilliance and a conforming curvaceous fit, the half-inch-wide sections of crystals on our piece alternate between tightly fused 0.75-inch-long rectangles and longer free-hanging finely-linked strands. This will enable the end to also be looped around the back below the buckle to resemble the "knot" in the Verdura-Flato belt necklace. A close examination with a loupe of the stones reveal minute loss of color on some that is not apparent to the eye. Otherwise the structure of this piece that links all the crystals is in excellent condition without any loss of stones. As the silver-soldered back of the buckle is reflective, please notice in our photo of it that the pink tone is the reflection of the photographer's skin.

  • KJL 1980s MuseumCollectedDesigner TwoStrandResin Boxed MidnightRose Necklace
    By Kenneth Jay Lane
    Located in Chicago, IL
Kenneth Jay Lane--whose monogram KJL is signed on the white-rose-decorated gold-tone clasp of this double-strand black-beaded resin necklace--is only one of four bylined jewelry designers collected by The Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection At The Metropolitan Museum of Art from the two-decade period between 1970-1989, which was dominated by such bold big shapes in mostly black, white and gold. A must for any collector of the world-renowned American-founded beauty-brand Avon, its rare limited-edition retailed necklace by Lane titled "Midnight Rose" is among the most distinctive that it produced among its lines of primarily perfume, cosmetics, and personal-care products whose origin dates back to 1886 in New York. Notably, the life-sized shiny cast-acrylic rose has the look of a far more expensive carved stone, such as one cut and polished from light-filled saturated-white chalcedony, which is a hard semi-precious stone favored by Lane. Like Lane's own line when it was originally signed KJL, the decorated clasp is uniquely designed. It locks underneath with a semi-circular hinge, which enables the stylized three-dimensional smooth rose to be perfectly positioned on the right side of the upper chest with the bud facing upwards above its three-leaf sepal in contrasting gilt textured metal. This position adds sparkle from above to the three pave rhinestones in a gold-tone setting at center of the rose, as if its dew-covered bud was beginning to open in strong moonlight. To balance the bold rose shape, the black strands cross each other below at a single point, which adds another eye-catching element to the concealed-string-tied necklace. In mint condition with no sign of wear, the necklace was acquired in its original lavender Avon retail box. In contrast, the paper shows wear and tear from handling, while still featuring the jewelry designer's full-name script signature, title, and text details like how to care for this synthetic jewelry. The metal-stamped hallmark is "KJL for Avon...

  • HaskellStyle PostWarII GlassLampworkPearlBeads GreenMetallic Filigree Necklace
    Located in Chicago, IL
This is an excellent mid-century Japanese reproduction of a Miriam Haskell glass green-tone and metallic three-strand choker necklace. It features the American designer's characteristic use of colorful hand-crafted lampwork, seed and faux-pearl beads, along with Parisian-style silver-gilt metal filigree caps and findings. A supplier of Haskell's post-WWII Japanese-made beads and findings also made its own unbranded designs using the same materials. Whereby "Japan" is discreetly stamped on the hook that enables fastening along the extension chain. The faux-nacre coating of the pearls has partly disappeared on only the gold-accented smallest round beads. This does not detract from the necklace because similar irregular patterns with a mix of colors are among the multiple styles and sizes of beads (see closeups). The many colors include gold, ecru, brown, seafoam green, olive, mint, and vivid green. If you want the look of an authentic Haskell necklace for a fraction of the price, then you may want this piece. Otherwise, we pride ourselves on being able to identify unsigned Haskell...
