Multicolor Bakelite Long Necklace with Articulated Crib Toy Doll Pendant, 1940s
About the Item
This stunning rare Bakelite long necklace was hand-crafted in France in the 1940s. The piece features a beaded design with an articulated crib toy doll pendant. The beaded necklace boasts autumnal colors with a lovely, warm palette of yellow butterscotch, red tea amber, green moss, cocoa brown, toffee brown, caramel brown, and ginger orange, many with marbling and swirling. The necklace has brass hardware links and a spring ring closing clasp. There is no visible maker's mark.
The necklace is in excellent condition, with minimal wear on the brass links.
Measurements: The necklace's total length is 24.41 in (62 cm) - The drop is 20.47 in (52 cm) - The pendant is 1.44 in wide (3.7 cm) x 9.07 in long (23 cm).
Note: The use of Bakelite crib toys for fashion jewelry.
A new form of Bakelite called Catalin was introduced in 1929, featuring a beautiful range of colors and creating an unbelievably cute aesthetic for these children's objects.
Gone were the old-fashioned silver and ivory teething rattles of the Victorian age. In the early 1930s, children had brightly colored plastic crib toys which were safe and indestructible. The condition of many of them today attests to that.
In the United States, one of the most popular manufacturers was Tykie Toys of Piqua, Ohio, which was in business until the late 1940s. Their designs included a range of little doll characters.
Other crib toys designed included bell boys, sailors, soldiers, and black American or African-inspired characters.
There was a huge fascination for anything exotic and people from far away, and the craze for jazz meant that black musicians were trendy at the time.
New York designer Jan Carlin made stunning Bakelite jewelry out of old pieces in the 1970s.
She has made many quirky brooches in the style of crib toys.
In France, the fashion for these adorable necklaces arrived at the end of the Second World War (presumably imported from the USA). Bakelite used in jewelry is very popular, and these pieces were hand-crafted until the early 1950s.

- Tiffany & Co. Kashmir Sapphire Necklace, 10.25 CaratsBy Tiffany & Co.Located in New Orleans, LACrafted by the legendary Tiffany & Co., this enchanting necklace is a rare and unique masterpiece of early 20th-century American jewelry design. Delicately handcrafted, the one-of-a-kind creation is set with two stunning examples of Kashmir sapphires weighing 5.65 and 4.60 respectively. These gemstones are certified by the American Gemological Laboratories as Kashmir in origin and completely untreated, an extreme rarity for Kashmirs. Dozens of sparkling white diamond accents complement the brilliant blue stones in a romantic, winding 18K yellow gold setting. These incredible sapphires would have been sourced by George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany & Co.'s expert gemologist, who selected only the finest gemstones for the firm's unique creations. The sapphires in this necklace are truly superior examples. Kashmir sapphires were first unearthed in the early 1880s after a landslide in the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. They are celebrated not only for their rarity, but also for the softness of their distinctive blue hue. Boasting incredible color and brilliance, untreated Kashmir sapphires of this quality are scarce, especially within an antique Tiffany setting. Since the firm's inception in 1837, Tiffany & Co. has been at the forefront of luxurious design and craftsmanship, especially in the realm of fine jewelry. Founder Charles Lewis Tiffany...Category

- Renaissance Cameo PendantLocated in New Orleans, LAThe cameo at the center of this exceptional pendant is a stunning example of the art of gem engraving during the Renaissance. It likely dates to the early 17th century and features a sacrificial scene inspired by the Greco-Roman era. The central flaming altar is flanked by two figures preparing to sacrifice a ram, while a figure in a lion skin blowing horns stands in the left corner. The carver brilliantly uses the natural layers of the stone to achieve the illusion of shadow and musculature on the figures. A second, smaller cameo is set at the top of the pendant, while a myriad of multi-colored gems, pearls and enamel adorns the 18K gold setting. A large Baroque pearl suspended from an enamel dragon finishes the design, which embodies the opulence and theatricality of jewels from the Renaissance age. Cameos and intaglios were highly popular amongst wealthy connoisseurs in Renaissance Italy, and owning the finest pieces was the privilege of princes. Although they were often elaborately mounted for display alone, cameos were also frequently worn as pendants, surrounded by enameled and stone-set gold frames. Such pieces were particularly prized by the Medici and Lorraine families, many of which can now be seen at the National Archeological Museum in Florence. Very few Renaissance cameos...Category
