Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (Ivory Coast, 1923-2014) is a self-taught artist, and one of the most significant international exponents in the post-World War II period not only for his visual creations, but also for his contributions in cultural fields such as poetry, philosophy and nonfiction. In 1948 he received a "revelation": from then on he called himself "Cheik Nadro" (the one who does not forget) and at that time he not only began a philosophical research on African reality and the meaning of life, but also began to create the monumental work entitled Connaissance du monde. He made with a pen and colored pencils, on 10×15 cm cards, a kind of visual encyclopedia that was enriched day by day. Another work of his of particular interest is Alphabet Bété, an alphabet consisting of 448 monosyllabic pictograms that would like to link European and African cultures with a view to brotherhood. These two such significant works, along with other series of drawings by the artist, form the core of this volume accompanying the exhibition organized at MoMA in New York entitled "Frédéric Bruly Bouabré: World Unbound." Bouabré has exhibited at the most prestigious international institutions: from the Centre George Pompidou in Paris, to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Modern in London and the Portikus in Frankfurt. He also participated in the 55th Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel and the São Paulo Biennale.
