About the Item

"Run-off Pipe, Million Dollar Bridge" is an original pastel and pencil drawing by Alicia Czechowski. The artist signed the piece lower right. This artwork depicts a water pipe in black scaffolding coming off of a bridge. It is winter. 12 3/4" x 16" art 22 1/4" x 26 7/8" frame Alicia Czechowski, notwithstanding an MFA in Art from Wayne State University, is a self-taught artist, as most artists have been. Visual art, like music or dance, is the result of continual practice and a love for the chosen medium of expression. As a child with a natural aptitude for drawing and a lust for sheer visual experience, she began drawing with whatever materials came to hand. Her drawing skills developed during her teens, keeping a sketchbook handy at all times with the result that she did thousands of impromptu studies from life of happenchance subjects that struck a chord; people and animals at rest and in motion, random objects, buildings, vistas, and extempore imagined imagery. Growing up in Detroit, Alicia Czechowski had ready access to the superb collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. At the age of ten she did her first copy of a painting, a still-life by Claesz, which she rendered on much reduced scale in colored pencil, and then she did a somewhat more ambitious quarter-scale oil copy of “Trappers on the Missouri” by Bingham. Later, she did full scale oil copies of paintings, or details of paintings, by Frans Hals, Rubens, Chardin, Gainsborough, Van Dyke, Velasquez, Fantin-Latour, Fragonard and G. D. Tiepolo in the National Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Through copying works by these artists, Czechowski's aim was to imbibe something of the virtuosic fluidity and transcendent expressiveness of their handling of the painting medium. She says, “Being at work with your brushes and colors in front of a living, breathing painting by one of the greats, like Hals or Velasquez, is the most potent learning experience. It's is the best way to learn to paint, almost like journeying back in time and actually watching them at work at their easels.” Alicia Czechowski's work is in private collections throughout the USA, in Mexico, Germany, the UK, and Japan. She has had solo shows in New York City, Connecticut, Maine and Wisconsin, as well as exhibiting widely throughout the US. She did over two hundred freelance illustrations for The New Yorker magazine during 1988 to 1995. Czechowski has taught painting, artistic anatomy, 3-D design, and drawing at Wayne State University, Portland School of Art, University of Utah, Heartwood College of Art, and was Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for five years. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Rahr-West Museum, Miller Art Museum, and Haggerty Museum of Art.

"Willow Shadows at Chenequa" is an original pastel drawing on canson paper by Peggy Leonard. The artist signed the piece lower left. It depicts a row of willow trees with deep shadows. The artist used variations of green and blue. 12 3/4" x 19 1/2" art 18 3/4" x 26" frame Peggy Leonard received her BFA in painting and drawing and an associate’s degree in nursing from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She is both a registered nurse, and accomplished artist, residing in Milwaukee, WI. From the artist: “These paintings are my prayers,” muses Leonard, reflecting on her driving need to express herself through her art. “We are made of the stuff that requires us to respond with our hearts and hands. Often, it requires terrible sacrifice and suffering, something not everyone can understand. But it is done with reverence of life, not irreverence.” Leonard’s pastels and oil paintings capture her reverence of life and reflect her own life’s journey, including earlier forays into the wilderness. Her venture into art began in early childhood, as childless neighbors nurtured her natural ability to draw; concurrently, Leonard’s parents instilled a respect for academic excellence and the higher order of nurturing others. As a young nurse, Leonard “heard and saw poignant messages to travel while one was young and free…while one had one’s health.” Consequently, she took to the open road and public lands, camping across America for months at a time. During these years, her “celebration of the natural splendor of this country” helped shape her sense of artistic expression. She was moved by such sights as the sunset on St. Mary’s Lake...

  • Secret Meadow (signed twice with inscription to art critic) letter of provenance
    By Wolf Kahn
    Located in New York, NY
Wolf Kahn Secret Meadow (signed twice with unique personal inscription to renowned art critic, with letter of provenance), 1974 Pastel on Paper - signed twice and hand inscribed, accompanied by letter of provenance Signed lower left front, titled lower middle, and inscribed, dated and signed again on the lower middle and right front Frame Included: elegantly matted and framed in a blond wood museum quality frame with UV plexiglass This poignant yellow pastel landscape is by the renowned painter Wolf Kahn, whose work is famously characterized by abstraction and figuration, as his gorgeously colored landscapes transform into color fields. This particular work is special because it came from the private collection of distinguished art critic and artist Lawrence (Larry) Campbell, who received it as a gift from Wolf Kahn in 1974. It is accompanied by a hand signed and dated Letter of Provenance from Mr. Campbell's daughter which reads, "This painting has been in my home since 1974 when it was given to my father, the late Lawrence (Larry) Campbell, by the artist, Wolf Kahn. In the lower right hand corner of the painting, Mr. Kahn wrote in pencil, 'To Larry in friendship- Wolf 1974.' My father was also a painter, a Director at the Arts Students League of New York, Professor of Art at Pratt Institute & Brooklyn College and an Art Critic for Art News and Art in America Magazines, for over 50 years." The work is also hand signed by the artist, lower left, so it bears two signatures. (For security purposes, the letter is not reproduced here, but the buyer of this work will receive the original hand signed letter...
