Cynthia MacCollum
Cynthia MacCollum is a painter, printmaker, and photographer who lives and works in New Canaan, CT. Her work has been shown online with ODETTA, NYC, and in person at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT; Elisa Contemporary Art, NY; First Street Gallery in New York; The Kellogg Gallery at Cal Poly Pomona, Blue Print Gallery in Dallas, Panopticon Gallery in Boston, and internationally in Cadaques, Spain, the UK, France and Hong Kong. In June, 2013, Cynthia’s work was selected by curator Donald Kuspit, one of 32 pieces out of thousands of submissions, to be part of the First Street Gallery National Juried Exhibit in New York City. As a child, MacCollum spent countless hours out of doors, often near the creek in the ravine behind her home. This early connection to nature instilled a reverence for the natural world that pervades all of her work. MacCollum’s daily habit of walking through the nature preserve near her home has informed and inspired much of her work over the last several years. MacCollum is a member of New Canaan’s Silvermine Guild, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, and Odetta Digital. A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis with a major in Art History and a minor in Fine Art, she has continued her studies at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, and through monthly critiques with the CritLab. Artist Residencies for three summers, at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Skopelos, Greece, have deepened MacCollum’s interest in the intersection of nature and art, and of painting, printmaking, and alternative processes. In addition to private collections, her work can be found in the Fine Art Collection of the Montefiore Health System and Memorial Sloane Kettering.

- One Potato - Tiny Original Still Life Painting of a Potato on Deckled Edge PaperBy Christina HaglidLocated in Chicago, IL"One Potato", by Christina Haglid, is a meticulously detailed watercolor of a potato. The paper had a deckled edge and matted with a heavy white mat. The piece is framed in a white wood frame with a heavy white mat measuring 14h x 10.5w inches. Christina Haglid One Potato watercolor and gouache on paper 4.50h x 2.50w in 11.43h x 6.35w cm Artist's Statement Tiny Sanctuaries There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences. At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night which will return to its purpose during the day. My intention is to not show the failure because I imagine all these objects make it through to better times. Allegories of survival. Someone comes by and finds the paper crane, the rowboat owners return and see their boat undisturbed, and the slide during the day brings joy. " The drawing as a gesture allows me to exploit a (re)mise-en-scene as so many possibilities in the making. Through the quality of drawing as a marker of thought, it is not a question of constructing "dream worlds" but rather of setting up a device that would allow for a conscious dialogue of a certain perception of the real." Fabien Granet is pursuing a research on the perception of the landscape, on our ways of trying to represent it, to understand it, to understand its structures. The drawn "landscapes" are thus as many projections of the artist, which convene and reveal his artistic path, the influences of his culture, his utopias, his dystopian fantasies. Another shift where the quasi scientific concern of objective rigor and the mental construction of an construction of an individual course. The drawing appears in this sense as an act as much as a work which The drawing appears in this sense as an act as much as a work which is registered in a research and a quest to pierce the enigma of the real. In his landscapes, Fabien Granet evokes a process of the mind, where shreds and fragments become entangled in a re-arrangement of of reality. Snippets of architecture and geometrical figures draw human and his gaze into it. The landscape is a human creation, but how does human try to perceive it, how does he understand its constructions? what is his mental image of it?
