Pebbles, sand and pigment on panel
Artist Statement
My artistic practice has been profoundly influenced by exposure to two vastly different environments. Firstly, growing up in London with minimal art and Modern architecture. This gave me the visual language of reduced and economical form and a fascination with systems, repetition and order. Secondly, the regular witnessing of the raw power of the coastline. This presented chaos, giving me an awareness of natural laws and an interest in physical matter.
I have been influenced in how scientific research influences our understanding of the natural world. Through observing nature and biomimicry, I have developed a process that allows me to 'draw' with a sand solution. This painstaking method enables the creation of form through line and texture around which other materials and pigments are then accumulated over time. The aim is to explore and mimic processes in the natural environment and continues my obsession with geometry, measure of the earth.
By reducing compositional elements to the minimum, I can explore natural pattern. I use repetition, sorting and accumulation to emphasise the organic ordering of parts to create heavily textured surfaces. Concentrating on patterns of repetition that are present on many scales, reminiscent of satellite imagery and microscopy.
Through my work I seek to reach a combination of these ingredients, aiming for a point of both tension and harmony where a frisson occurs. I aim to create pieces that provoke contemplation on the similarity and complexity of mathematical patterns around us.

Martha Winter was born in 1966 in London. Her work is the unusual outcome of many influences. Growing up with minimal art and modern architecture has influenced her visual language of reduced and economical form. She is fascinated by systems, repetition and order, often working in series. Winter also regularly witnessed the extreme erosion of the coastline which gave her an interest in the natural processes involved in forming the landscape, explored further during a trip to the Galapagos. Nature’s patterns are of great interest to Winter, her recent work explores the never ending permutations of pattern within the seascape. Through observing nature and exploring biomimicry, Winter has developed unique processes, creating heavily textured permanent wall pieces reminiscent of satellite imagery and microscopy. Her process involves the slow layering of pigments and the drifting of sand. Through the slow build up of layers, Winter creatives strong meditative pieces of great subtlety.
Winter has worked in conjunction with architects to create large series of work for specific locations. Her work is commissioned by designers for private clients, hotels, cruise ships, offices and institutions. The work goes from the studio to locations across the globe.

- Theory XBy Edward LentschLocated in Fort Lauderdale, FLEdward Lentsch’s expansive artistic practice explores his relationship between the self, nature and the universe. From the Fibonacci sequence to the teachings of Aristotle, Lentsch attempts to create a bridge between the natural world and these intellectual canons, exploring the interconnection between the realms of science and mysticism, the metaphysical and the spiritual. He explores how these three facets are integrated within a global environment and moreover how we, as humans, fit within this complex matrix of thought using the ideas of some of the world’s greatest writers and scholars. Lentsch works across a variety of media to create an ‘energy of intention’, in which textures, compositions and colours (or their absence) are combined. At first glance, his abstract canvases bring to mind the earthen tones of Kiefer, or the scratched surfaces of Tàpies. Lentsch, however, draws from a broader art historical canon, and painting becomes an extension of the life force around him, a transformative experience through which he can mediate a pure experiential moment. Flowing from a nonverbal intuitive state of creative expression, Lentsch bridges a complex visual language in which colours and textures are lifted from the natural world. On canvas, they are refracted and tessellated, at times put through the process of entropy, which allows for them to be transformed and transmuted. Lentsch starts with a mastic and polymer foundation, before working with stone powders and dry pigments. Here, while the work is still wet, he uses trowels...Category
