About the Item

French designer and graphic artist Stéphane Gautier draws on a unique talent for deciphering symbols and images in his art and transforming them into a universal visual alphabet. Gautier created his first picture at 13, deciding to stick and paint his toys on a canvas. This provocative arouses emotion in all who recognize the sentimental objects that mark their memories. His imagery speaks directly to the viewer's sentimentality, charming them closer to a world of jumbled meaning. His creations are undoubtedly jubilant and display his expertise as much as his enthusiasm. Gautier moves from one medium to another, challenging the possibilities of ready-made art and the playful manufactured staples of adolescence to turn them into pictures, sculptures, or surrealist objects. By moving an object from one context to another and re-injecting the stereotypical symbols of childhood into an adult setting, he turns away from all traditional codes of art (pictures, paintings, sculptures, drawings) only to shift their meaning. This intuitive creator invites us to a deeper consideration of the means of representation, the effectiveness of advertising and propaganda, and finally, the reappropriation of childhood nostalgia.

'I am a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on ecofeminism using fiber and mixed media constructions. My materials include hand-dyed commercially fished line and ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles, fabric printed with cyanotype emulsions and found objects. I change the existing surface of recognizable animals by creating a veneer of unexpected color and imagery. This forces the viewer to consider the shape more carefully by visually exploring its new topography. The creation process can be likened to painting with fiber (that has been tinted with hand-mixed dyes) on a three-dimensional canvas. Intense work is spent creating the eyes and ears to convey the emotion of each animal. I look to the work of Joan Mitchell and The Quilters of Gee’s Bend as inspiration for pattern and color, as well as charts, iconography, and satellite imaging.' -Gin Stone...
