At $13.00 per volume, the four volumes of Weinmann’s Phytanthoza Iconographia, from the library of Don Antonio, may have seemed a bit expensive in 1824. However, the directors of the Library Company considered the materia medica, the most extensive compendium to that time, worth the money and acquired it for the Loganian Library. We applaud their wisdom.
Compiled under the supervision of Weinmann, a Ratisbon apothecary, this interesting and valuable 18th century florilegium contains 1,025 plates of plants, trees, fruits and vegetables. Various artists were employed in the production, including the distinguished German botanical draughtsman Georg Dionysius Ehret. The text in Latin and German was the work of Johann Georg Dieterichs, his son Ludwig Michael Dieterichs and Ambrose Karl Bieler.
The Phytanthoza Iconographia is remarkable not only for the beauty and accuracy of its illustrations, but also for its successful use of color printing. It is considered the premier work in mezzotint engravings. Most of the plates have solid areas in colored mezzotint; the watercolor details were added later by hand. The frontice piece and two portraits, printed in blue, are the work of the Augsburg mezzotinter Johann Jakob Haid who with his fellow citizens, Ridinger and Seuter did the engravings of the plants.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) was a botanist, pharmacist and academic scholar who directed a famous pharmacy in Regensburg. The "Phytanthoza Iconographia" was his masterpiece; a huge work in eight folio volumes, which provided one of the most comprehensive botanical references of the eighteenth century. It has been described as a "pioneering work of botanical prints” and it remains today one of the most ambitious works ever undertaken, displaying over 4,000 species. The artist for much of the work was the gifted and very collectible Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770). Born into a humble family in Heidelberg, Germany, Ehret was taught to draw by his father at an early age. As a young man, he worked as a gardener, first for the Elector of Heidelberg and then the Margrave of Badaen-Durlac. He became a well respected botanist and entomologist and one of the most influential European botanical artists of all time.

London, 1862. Engraving. Printed in Colours. Hand-Painted Gold Highlights. To produce a study for an historic illumination of antiphonals, the Arundel Society selected each of the alphabet letters from chorale books created in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Devotional pieces, the chorale music was greatly appreciated by Christians throughout the world. Often it was sung as responsive music where the choir would be divided into two parts thus creating a harmony which reinforced the Christian religious doctrine. As illustrious as the music, the key letters that headed each piece would take their own place in the art world. Many initials would be specifically devoted to prominent men and woman of both religious and cultural importance. For example, the “F” was devoted to Fra Angelico, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists...Category
