Asprey and Co. Ltd. New Bond Street, London. No date [1930s]. Hardback; laminated crocidle-effect boards, backed with vellum spine. 207 illustrated pages. c. 40 hors-texte colour plates. English. Good; wear to forecorners, small bump to lower edge of rear board, soiling to vellum spine, boards bowed; pencil diagrams to front free endpaper, slight grubbiness to endpapers and prelims, crease to top forecorner of first few pages, a couple of tears and creases to final index page.
The sought-after Art Deco trade catalogue produced by the luxury goods firm Asprey & Co. in the 1930s. The catalogue is extensively illustrated with multiple items on every page, each with a price and dimensions. Included in the book are dressing cases, luggage cases, jewellery, watches, cigarette cases, purses, books, stationery, silverware, tableware, motoring goods and cocktail cabinets. He was active in the pop art movement of the 60s. Biography: Gee was born on July 23, 1932 in Leicestershire, England. He was interested in drawing as a child and worked as a graphic designer for the British army when he joined at the age of 18. By the end of the 50s, he had exhibited at the Denise Rene Gallery in Paris, where he lived briefly, and the Axiom Gallery in London. He came to the US in 1962. Throughout the 60s, Gee experienced a high degree of success as a pop artist in Manhattan. His work from this era has been collected by The Museum of Modern Art in both New York City and Kyoto, The Smithsonian and the Library of Congress in Washington DC, and The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Gee exhibited with Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana for the "Word and Image" show in 1968 at the Museum of Modern Art. During this time, he was also teaching classes at the New School, the School of Visual Arts, and the Harvard Architectural School.
