Alexander Markovich
Understanding Dharmata - The Unconditioned Truth

circa 1985

About the Item

Alexander Markovich, the esteemed American artist painted this work entitled, "Understanding Dharmata- The unconditioned truth", circa 1985. The work consists of pictographic black and white strokes and symbols against a radiant gold background. The painting concern the Buddhist concept of Dharmata, or the essence of all things- a truth that is revealed only upon death. This work proved prescient for Markovich- an artist whose life was tragically cut short. Dharmata is said to manifest as a "luminosity dissolving into union" as one becomes instantaneously aware of a fully connected world of light, sound and color. This painting conveys that fantastic immediacy. As described by Svetlana Rakic in her book "Alexander Markovich: A Journey Towards the Divine", "the energy of brush marks is simultaneously condensed and dispersed; the paint is diluted and thickened in layer upon layer; we are invited to indulge in the pure, non-conceptual abstraction of color-light, while at the same time we are seduced into image grasping attempts to decipher the figurative references within the painting." Markovich produced all of his work in a single decade spanning from 1980 to 1990. This piece represents a stunning and important example of his practice, encapsulating his skill and versatility as a painter, as well as the themes that occupied him throughout his career. Rife with art historical references spanning from Chinese calligraphy to gestural abstraction of Cy Twombly and zen steeped compositions of Brice Marden and Mark Tobey, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of modern art, as well as those with a penchant for beautiful paintings. The pieces are presented in custom yellow gilt frames. These works are described on pages 205-216 (with color plates on pages 209 and 211, as well as on the cover of Rakic's book) of "Alexander Markovich: Journey Towards the Divine" (included with purchase) by Svetlana Rakic. Excellent condition. American, circa 1985 Dimensions: 76.25 X 37.75"W X 2"D

  • Mid Century Modern Abstract Expressionist Gino Hollander Oil on Canvas Painting
    By Gino Hollander
    Located in New York, NY
This sophisticated and large scale Mid Century Modern abstract expressionistic oil on canvas painting was realized by the esteemed 20th century visual artist and filmmaker Gino Hollander (1924-2015), in the United States in 1974. In dialogue with other canonized visualized artists of the period, most notably Joan Mitchell, this painting offers a dynamic composition in an understated and vibrant palette using a variety of painterly techniques. Executed in predominantly in grisaille and flaxen hues with ecru and amber accents, the composition features turpentine rivulets of running pigment; chunky blocks of paint rendered with a palette knife; and delicately applied brush strokes against a painted white background. The result is a captivatingly layered work that offers sustained visual pleasure and abundant visual discoveries. The solid white background adds negative space but also breath and depth to the composition. Full of verve and dynamism- and exhibiting masterful paint handling-, this painting embodies the qualities that discerning collectors of Abstract Expressionism (and modern art in general) absolutely adore. It would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century Modern to contemporary. It is signed and dated by the artist, and is in excellent vintage condition. The work comes presented in a custom black inked gallery frame. Gino Hollander was born in the New Jersey in 1924 and attended Rutgers University as well Hobart and William Smith College. He had two very different careers before he began painting – the first as part of the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop, and the second, an award-winning director and documentary filmmaker. Demonstrating his artistic versatility, Gino Hollander took up painting in 1960. From 1960 to 1962, Gino ran his first Hollander Gallery...
