About the Item
At the heart of each of Frank’s paintings is the Japanese concept of Ma, which is the space or pause between events, moments, forms, and thoughts. It can be felt, for example, at the bottom of a bow or in the silences that are common in Japanese conversation. These ostensibly empty intervals are in fact full—of energy, meaning, or agreement. Ma is also central to many Japanese art forms, including ikebana (flower arranging) and Noh theater. It likewise serves as the basis for Frank’s paintings, which are built up from hundreds of layers of paint. But rather than the layers themselves, it is the space in between the layers, Frank notes, that gives the works their depth and allows them to be experienced both visually and viscerally. The final paintings produce a sense of transcendence, asking us to consider how the edges of our lives—those areas adjacent to wherever we are, physically or emotionally—might be charged with an energy, potentiality, or resonance.
Frank’s Spaces in Between series features precise forms that fan open and close, like the scattered beams of searchlights as they whirl and rake through the sky. These beams are often concentrated in the center of the compositions, where they intersect to create hourglass-like shapes. Other times, their arrangement is more diffuse, crisscrossing in elegant patterns of syncopation that result in crystalline structures. Her series Refraction uses light in a similar way, though to different ends. Frank explores refractivity in these works, using her own language to capture the optical play of light rays deflecting and transforming as they interact with their environment. The remarkable depth conjured by paintings from both series is a product of their inherent Ma, which Frank achieves through her rigorous and time-consuming process. Each layer represents a single day, as Frank has to allow the medium to dry between applications. By emphasizing deep, ponderous blues, greens, and purples, her color palette aids the contemplative, almost mysterious mood unleashed by what can be viewed as renderings of time.

Bernadette Jiyong Frank
By integrating the concept of "Ma" into her artistic practice, Bernadette Jiyong Frank (Tokyo, 1964) invites viewers to embrace the significance of silence, emptiness, and the intervals between events. Her work creates a space for contemplation and highlights the meaningful presence that exists within the void. Bernadette Jiyong Frank employs multiple layers of translucent paint in her artwork. Each layer is applied slowly and deliberately, allowing time for the paint to dry before applying the next layer. This process creates depth and richness in the final piece. Time plays a significant role in Jiyong Frank's artistic process. By adhering to the practice of applying only one layer per day, she emphasizes the importance of patience and reflection. This approach acknowledges the passage of time as an integral part of the creative journey. The act of applying each layer of paint is considered a meditative process for Jiyong Frank. This suggests that she approaches her work with a sense of mindfulness and introspection, channeling her focus into each brushstroke. The meditative quality of her application technique likely contributes to the contemplative nature of her artworks. Jiyong Frank views the application of each layer as an act of creating space within the artwork. As the layers accumulate over time, they contribute to the overall dimensionality of the piece. This technique allows the viewer to engage with the artwork on multiple levels, both visually and conceptually.

- "Elements (Lines) 3080" Abstract Layered Composition on Baltic Birch PanelBy Christie OwenLocated in New York, NYThis piece depicts an abstract composition with the use of mixed media and bold patterns producing a work that is visually textured and rich with layers, as Owen creates an intricate geometric minimalistic composition. Even though this work has a rustic and heavily textured quality, the final result is intended to appear quiet to reflect a more minimal outlook on life and art. Creating a piece that allows us to escape the technological realm, contemplate modern living and nature and then communicate how each domain influences another. Her piece aims to engage the viewer with an emotional and environmental disposition that evokes a sense of balance and tranquility in the modern world. This unique work is executed on 2.5 depth baltic birch...Category
