About the Item

Elvis 66 x 88 writing Whatever I will become will be what God has chosen for me. I ain't no saint, but I've tried never to do anything that would hurt my family or offend God. I figure all any kid needs is hope and the feeling he or she belongs. If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world. The child needs a helping hand or he’ll grow up to be an angry young man some day. Don’t criticize what you don’t understand, son. You never walked in that man’s shoes. To judge a man by his weakest link or deed is like judging the power of the ocean by one wave. So many kids and adults, too, have gotten just about one of the roughest breaks that can happen to a person. We can help these people. Tomorrow will be too late, it’s now or never. Never wait for tomorrow, what if tomorrow never comes? Do something worth remembering. We can’t build our dreams on a suspicious mind. You’ve got to follow that dream, wherever that dream may lead. Live each day, as if it were your last. It’s written in the stars, your destiny is cast. Elvis Aaron Presley As an undergraduate Christina Major developed into a portrait painter. Major has been interested in the ways the identity of both artist and subject can coexist in a portrait. Major also has a desire to combine portrait painting with writing (inspired from her Graphic Design studies) as well as to develop methods of using paint to express a merging of herself with the individual depicted in the portrait. Her creative research focuses on the traditional form of the portrait as a powerful form of representing an individual and how meaning can be expanded through scale, brushstroke, color, texture, composition and the many variables that portraiture deals with. Major looks to expand on the traditional portrait painting by cataloguing her memories and thoughts along with the thoughts of the subject by painting under, into and over the subject in her handwriting. Majors “hand” is visible both in the brushstroke and in the cursive writing, preserving her identity in a “readable” way both literally and through graphology, or handwriting analysis. The paintings are done primarily in oil on canvas grounds prepared with gesso and stretched. They are generally of monumental size ranging from 48” to 96” in each dimension. Major wants the portraits to feel overwhelming and have a “larger-than-life” presence that cannot be ignored. The large scale also supports her in creating a different “reading” of the painting depending on the viewing distance. Areas read quite abstractly when viewed up close and the emphasis appears to be brush stroke, dabs of color with energy and texture that is related to the form of the cursive text. From a further viewing point, the image coalesces from the fragmented strokes and layers of writing drawing focus to the likeness of the subject painted.

Quotes within painting: "A photograph can be an instant of life captured for eternity that will never cease looking back at you. Do you have to have a reason for loving? It is sad to grow old but nice to ripen. I leave before being left. I decide. I left a world in which I was a queen to enter one in which I'm a human being. I am not an actress. I can only play me - on and off the screen Every age can be enchanting, provided you live within it My wild and free side unsettled some, and unwedged others When I love, I do it without counting. I give myself entirely. And each time, it is the grand love of my life I never do anything by chance. People are forever finding something wrong with you. I have been very happy, very rich, very beautiful, much adulated, very famous and very unhappy. Success is unpredictable and fragile." • Bay View
    By Angel Ramiro Sanchez
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Painted from life, a bright and colorful seascape of a bay beneath a rich blue sky and reaching lavender clouds. A sliver of dark greens depict a thin horizon. Signed: Angel Ramiro Sanchez in lower right corner Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program. Ramiro paints only from life, searching for accuracy beyond physical appearance to reach the psychological state of his subject. He believes the painter must draw his information from "all five senses" to tell the complete human story. Ramiros work is predominantly represented by th e Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York, but also Scriba Gallery, venice, Italy, Jack Meier Gallery, Houston, Tx. Ramiros works can be found in numerous private collections in Europe, The United States and South America. Public collections include: The Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Italy. A memory of past travels to the beautiful, unspoilt and timeless Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territories. The white egret provides the focal point, flying above the wetlands towards the distant gum trees with their distinctive white trunks. In 2013, she obtained an Honours degree in Art History when she found she was drawn mostly to artists who painted light. Influences include the 17th century Dutch landscape painters...
