Provenance Galerie Renée Laporte, Antibes, France Private Collection, New Orleans Born in Stockholm in 1920 to a distinguished family of goldsmiths who had supplied the Russian tsars and the Swedish royal family for three generations, Gustav Bolin was taken to France the following year, where he would remain for the rest of his life. At the age of 18, he began working in the Paris studio of Othon Friesz, but that experience was soon interrupted by the Nazi occupation in 1940. Bolin sought refuge in the south of France, where he befriended the artists André Lhote, Alexandre Garbell, Pierre Tal-Coat and Charles Rollier, with whom he exhibited at the Musée de Valence. In 1943, before returning to Paris, he made a pilgrimage through Provence in the footsteps of Cezanne and Van Gogh. The landscapes of this region would serve as his lifelong muse, inspiring the whimsical, abstract landscapes for which he became widely acclaimed. Following Paris’ liberation by the Allies, Bolin returned to the city and immersed himself in the artistic milieu around the Café Dôme, becoming good friends with Alberto Giacometti and Nicolas de Staël. His first post-war exhibitions began in 1947 at the Salon de Mai, followed by a solo show at the avant-garde Galerie Pierre Loeb in 1948. He became a frequent exhibitor at the Galerie Art Vivant, showing with contemporaries such as de Staël, Tal-Coat, Joan Miró, Jacques Germain, and André Lanskoy, on several occasions between 1950 and 1957. This early commercial success afforded him the opportunity to purchase property along the coast in Antibes, where he could work in the Mediterranean landscape he loved. Bolin continued to participate in the Salon de Mai, and the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, cementing his reputation as an evocative colorist. In 1960, 61, and 63, he was invited by the Galerie Charpentier to participate in the “Ecole de Paris” exhibitions; and at Galerie Kriegel between 1962 and 1969. Beginning in 1963, Bolin enjoyed further prominence by accepting invitations to exhibit in the U.S. with the David Findlay Gallery in New York, and also in Japan at the Nichido Gallery in Tokyo. In 1973, he was awarded a major exhibition at the Musée Galliera in back home in Paris. Bolin would continue to show widely and steadily over the remainder of his life, including a number of exhibitions in his native Sweden. Bolin died in Antibes in 1999. Today, Bolin’s work can be found in many public collections including the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, the Museum of Luxembourg, the Swedish Embassy (Paris), and the Department des Arts et des Lettres. Theodore Franklin (“Ted”) Appleby, Jr. was born January 28, 1923 in Asbury Park, New Jersey to a very prominent family in Monmouth County. He attended the Pauling School in New York and studied at the atelier of John Corneal. On December 12, 1942, Appleby enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, subsequently seeing action in the Marshall Islands. Upon the conclusion of the war, he was stationed for a year in Yokohama, Japan, where he studied local engraving techniques. In 1947, after returning home, Appleby moved to Mexico for a year to study mural painting in San Miguel de Allende. Following his sojourn in Mexico, Appleby briefly returned home to the U.S. before ultimately relocating to Paris. There, he joined a lively community of expatriate American artists involved with what would come to be known as the “School of Paris.” Appleby befriended fellow Americans Sam Francis and Jackson Pollock, exhibiting extensively throughout France with the former. He also regularly visited the atelier of Fernand Léger, and was represented in the "Salon de Réalités Nouvelles" and the “Salon d’Automne” during the 1950s and 60s. From 1955 to 1961, Appleby participated in group exhibitions in Chicago, Leverkusen (Germany), Lisbon, London, and Paris. He also had three notable solo exhibitions during this period: Studio Facchetti, Paris (1956); Martha Jackson Gallery, New York (1957); and the American Cultural Center, Paris (1959). In 1957, Appleby’s work was presented at the 62nd American Exposition of Painters and Sculptors at the Chicago Art Institute, where he was awarded the Norman Wait Harris Bronze Medal and Prize. Answering the famed artist André Lhote’s call to help save the village of Alba-la-Romaine in the Ardèche, Appleby and his wife - the artist Hope Manchester - purchased a home in the village in 1950, ultimately settling there until their deaths. In his luminescent multi-paneled oil paintings Freed tries to find the gray area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. Artist Statement For nearly twenty years, I made non-objective grid structured paintings. I started to see references to landscape in these works. I've literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels. Usually one panel is landscape imagery. The adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes. I try to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. My intent is to create paintings imbued with a meditative, spiritual presence suggesting issues about time and ecology. I do this by softly modulating color, tone and value. The color varies from quiet, monochromatic works to fully orchestrated chromatic ones. By blending from one hue to another I create color which makes its self gradually felt, weeping forth. In this manner, I create illusions of mysterious emanations of light, places where ones eyes and spirit are invited to linger. I try to imbue my work with a monumental presence, epic in both size and scope. I do this by orchestrating the separate elements of color, texture and structure into a harmonious whole. I seek a somewhat reductive image rich in value and contrast. The surface of the work is devoid of textural incidence. I don’t want anything to distract from the illusion of depth so I deny any marks which would hold the viewer on the surface of the painting. In my luminescent multi- paneled oil paintings I try to find the grey area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. The compositions are about ambiguities of form and void, foreground and background and surface and deep space. My roots lie in tonalism, color field painting and minimalism. However, my work contains an ever-present awareness of the dramatic use of light of the post-renaissance chiaroscurists. It combines a classical awareness of structure with a romantic use of color always in combination with a unique sense of ambiguity. My work continues in its evolution of style the search for an abstract means of probing the ambiguities of physical and spiritual experience of light, and its power to foster a more intense life of the spirit through profound emotional experience of form, color and composition.
