Katherine Borkowski-Byrne
"Yin-Yang", abstract, expressionist, red, blue, yellow, oil painting

2021

About the Item

Katherine Borkowski-Byrne’s “Yin-Yang” is a colorful abstract expressionist oil painting 38 x 60 x 1.5 inches on linen with thick and thin spontaneous brushwork, drips and splashes. Calligraphic marks are intermixed with painterly painting. This piece, representing ancient Chinese philosophy, began with two large opposing shapes, representing Yin and Yang, facing in separate directions with marks making moves away from each other. Primary colors of reds, blues and yellows were added to the first layer. Later the two opposite shapes were joined with the addition of more lines with oranges and greens. With quick strokes, white and black lines were added to create one shape with Yin becoming Yang and Yang becoming Yin. Hints of the two separate shapes still remain. This emotionally raw painting changes dramatically in different lighting and will continue to reveal surprising details. “Yin-Yang” has a vibrant overall composition. It hangs well without a frame with sides painted white and the signature on the reverse. Katherine paints while listening to opera and translates the many layered-music into many-layered paintings. She is influenced by the art of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism with it’s focus on being in the moment and the use of fortunate accidents and experimental techniques. Katherine’s work is in many corporate and private collections. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
