About the Item

Vivien Abrams Collens is a mid-career abstract artist born in Cleveland, Ohio, whose current practice includes site specific installations, sculpture and painting. After graduating with a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, she studied in San Miguel de Allende Mexico for two years, receiving an MFA from Institute Allende. Upon returning to the US, she felt out of touch with art being done by her peers, and decided she would have to live in the USA or be an expatriate artist living in another country. Renting a studio in Cleveland, she supported herself by working at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art. After achieving regional recognition for her work, relief wall constructions, and shaped / constructed painting installations, the stimulation of the NYC art world and opportunities brought her to NYC in 1977. Her early NYC works (signed Vivien Abrams) were widely shown in NYC and elsewhere in the 70s and 80s and many are in museum and corporate collections. Approaching the end of her childbearing years, she married, had two children and took her husband's surname. During the following years of family responsibility, Vivien continued her studio practice but agreed to few exhibition opportunities. In 2015 Vivian Collens began exhibiting again, with her “Urban Studies and City Blocks “solo exhibition at the Rockefeller Center headquarters of Gensler. Included were City Blocks, her first freestanding sculptures, along with her Urban Studies paintings from the past few years. She then began developing larger sculptures focusing on urban architecture and energy. These led to a dialogue with the environment and public sculpture. In 2017 Collens installed an 18' high sculpture for the Cary Hill Sculpture Park in Salem, NY, and completed installation of a 16"high welded aluminum commissioned sculpture for the permanent collection of the Kenner Sculpture Garden in New Orleans. Vivian Abrams Collins paintings about urban environments use multiple perspectives , geometry, pattern, color and line to evoke urban experiences of architecture and changing views as one moves through the city in subways, cars, escalators and elevators and sees the city from different vantage points. There is a synergy between her paintings and 3 dimensional works The drawings and paintings always have been springboards for various series of relief wall constructions such as this 1979 construction and more recently, sculptural installations.

  • German Mixed Media Puzzle Art Contemporary Abstract Painting Frank Aumueller
    Located in Surfside, FL
Dimensions: 19" x 13" including frame, 17.5" x 11.5" image only. Frank Aumüller is a contemporary artist. Frank Aumüller is a german male artist born in Stuttgart (DE) in 1960. Frank Aumueller had his first exhibition at Art Cologne 1989 at Koelnmesse GmbH in Cologne in 1989, and Prognose at Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart in 2021. A notable show was 2041 Endlosschleife at Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart in 2014. Other notable shows were at Villa Merkel - Galerie der Stadt Esslingen in Esslingen and Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg. Frank Aumüller has been exhibited with Hildegard Esslinger and Beate Baumgärtner. Aumuellers jigsaw puzzle pictures are results of a multistage production process. Expressive, partially with strong auto-lacquers created paintings form the basis. Aumueller then takes a photograph of these abstract color experiments and cuts the photo by machine into jigsaw puzzles. Afterwards he reassembles individual parts, whereby the original parts produce a new picture in a new composition, a sculpture work. At first sight the jigsaw puzzle pictures appear as a "pleasant idea": The result of time-consuming artistic creation is presented as a well-known game for children and adults. This appears to be an ironic move by Aumueller. However, irony is not the artist's concern. There is more to the jigsaw puzzles than just a nice conception: Aumueller labels his jigsaw puzzles "unstable equilibria" - a suitable description for many things in a world which in many ways appears to be stable and arranged. The jigsaw puzzle is more than just a means of formal expression. Sight size: 39-3/4"h x 30"w Overall: 40-3/4"h x 30-3/4"w This is done in an Abstract Expressionist style with bold enamel like paint and applied ceramic or glass iridescent mosaic tiles. Alexander Raymond Katz, Hungarian / American (1895 – 1974) Alexander Raymond Katz was born in Kassa, Hungary, and came to the United States in 1909. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In the late 1920s, he worked as a director of the Poster Department at Paramount Studios. He was appointed the Director of Posters for the Chicago Civic Opera in 1930. A WPA muralist, illustrator and modernist painter especially known for paintings with Jewish themes and narrative American scene works. Many notable Jewish artists worked for the WPA amongst them Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Aaron Bohrod and many more. During the Great Depression, notable architect Frank Lloyd Wright urged Katz to become a muralist. In 1933, he was commissioned to paint a mural for the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. In 1936, he painted the mural History of the Immigrant for the Madison, Ill., post office. Katz’s works were included in various exhibitions and now are part of several museum collections, including those of the Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Jewish Museum, New York. His murals, bas-reliefs and stained glass designs adorn more than 200 Jewish synagogues in the United States. Katz and other Jewish artists in Chicago who expressed Jewish and Biblical themes were inspired by the artist Abel Pann (1883-1963). Pann, who is regarded as the leading painter of the Land of Israel, exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1920. Early in his career, Katz began to explore the artistic possibilities inherent in the characters of the Hebrew alphabet. He developed aesthetic and philosophical interpretations of each letter and became the leading innovator and pioneer in the field of Hebraic art. Katz applies this concept in the woodcut Moses and the Burning Bush. Hebrew letters appears in Moses’ head, his cane and inside the flame. The initial of Moses’ name crowns his head. The letter in the flame is the first letter of the name of God. A combination of images and Hebrew letters appeared commonly in illustrations of the scene Moses and the Burning Bush in the Haggadah, the book of Passover. The symbolism of the burning bush corresponds to the motifs of A Gift to Biro-Bidjan. Among the fourteen participating artists were notable Chicago modernists Todros Geller, Mitchell Siporin, A. Raymond Katz, David Bekker...
